On September 9, at the permanent seminar of the G. Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies, researcher Khorshid Khodabakhshrashad will deliver a lecture, “Gender and Gender Stereotypes in Fifth-Grade Persian Textbooks: A Comparison of the 2011 and 1975 Textbooks”
Annotation
This lecture examines the representation of gender and the reproduction of gender stereotypes in two Iranian fifth-grade Persian textbooks published in 2011 and 1975. Using comparative qualitative content analysis, it investigates how school textbooks may consciously or unconsciously reproduce and reinforce gender roles and thereby contribute to the formation of children’s gender identities.
The findings indicate that, despite having been produced under markedly different political and social conditions, both textbooks reproduce gender stereotypes prevalent in their respective historical contexts. The comparison therefore reveals both continuity and change in the ways gender relations are represented, reproduced, and normalized through school education in Iran.
The research on which this lecture is based was published as a monograph in Germany in 2015, authored by the speaker, Khorshid Khodabakhshreshad, under the title Darstellung von Geschlechterverhältnissen in iranischen Grundschulbüchern.
