SUMMARY:Workshop “Grounded Theory” for Doctoral Students and Young Researchers
DESCRIPTION:Ilia State University’s International Doctoral School offers a workshop on Grounded Theory (GT) for doctoral students and young researchers. This workshop interactively examines the basic ideas and concepts of GT methodology in theory and practice. In the first phase\, we will discuss GT’s philosophical origins as well as its main methodological perspectives. Then we address key issues such as what is a GT research question and how to phrase questions that are appropriate to the GT imperative of openness in order to discuss the main features of a GT study design. In a third phase\, we will analyze potential challenges and pitfalls of the research practice. GT concepts that might seem blurry\, e.g. “saturation of data” and “theoretical sampling”\, will be clarified.\nUpon completion of the workshop\, an attendance certificate will be issued for each participant. \nMandatory Reading: Corbin\, Juliet/Strauss\, Anselm (1990): Grounded Theory Research. Procedures\,\nCanons\, and Evaluation Criteria. In: Qualitative Sociology 13/1\, pp 3-21.\nParticipants of the workshop will be provided with a copy upon registration. \nVenue: Ilia State University\, E Building\, E-207\, Cholokashvili Ave. 3/5\, 0162 Tbilisi \nDates and Times: \n\nMonday\, February 10\, 2020; 10:00-14:30\nTuesday\, February 11\, 2020; 10:00-14:30\nWednesday\, February 12\, 2020; 10:00-14:30\n\nInstructor: Dr. Yvonne Franke (Georg-August-University of Göttingen\, Faculty of Social Sciences) \nLanguage of Instruction: English \nMaximum Number of Participants: 20 \nRegistration: Prior registration is required and the principle of priority applies. SUMMARY:Public Lecture by Katarzyna Sidło
DESCRIPTION:Title: \nWorking in sales\, medieval Muslim style. A short history of some of the most controversial commutative contracts in Islamic economics \nAnnotation \nBayʿsalam/salaf – as sale of an object with a future delivery and on-spot payment – is arguably one of the most curious ones among commutative contracts deemed ḥalāl in Islamic economics. Being a sale of an object not in the possession of the seller—more often than not due to its nonexistence at the time when the contract is being concluded—and with the resulting uncertainty over their ability to deliver the subject-matter\, the transaction should theoretically be forbidden under the rules governing gharar (exorbitant risk/uncertainty)sales. However\, most scholars consider salam contract permissible on account of a ḥadīth\, according to which it was allowed by the Prophet himself\, as well as the belief that in this particular case “the requirements of law yielded (rakhkhasa) in face of the people’s need for it”( al-Sarakhsi\, al-Mabsut\, vol. 9). Against this background\, during the talk I will trace the provenience of bayʿsalam and explore the collective thought process that led to its establishment as one of the core Islamic financial contracts. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
