SUMMARY:International Research Conference Ilia Chavchavadze: Sacralisation/Secularisation of the Cultural Figure
DESCRIPTION:On October 24-25\, International research conference dedicated to the 180th anniversary of Ilia Chavchavadze’s birth will be held at the Ilia State University\, Ligamus bookstore auditorium. Scholars from Ilia State University\, University of Amsterdam\, University of Kent\, Institute of Slovenian Literature and Literary Studies\, Hungarian Academy of Science Institute of Literary Studies\, Ivane Javakishvili Tbilisi State University\, Shota Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature\, Free University of Tbilisi\, Georgian Technical University\, Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University\, Gori State Teaching University will participate in the conference. \nThe conference is organized by the Institute of Comparative Literature\, Ilia State University. Organizers: Prof. Giga Zedania\, Prof. Bela Tsipuria. \nConference Program \n\nIlia Chavchavadze is considered Georgia’s most important national figure\, the national poet\, the major contributor to the development of modern Georgian national identity\, the introducer of ideas of secularity\, civic culture and modern statehood to his contemporary Georgia. He is a sacral figure of Georgia’s cultural space/a cultural saint\, and the saint of the Georgian Orthodox Church. \nThe tradition of veneration of Ilia Chavchavadze was established in Georgia already in his lifetime\, and is carried on nowadays. Within 110 years since his death\, most differing and even opposing ideological\, political or cultural discourses in Georgia have been claiming the ownership upon his legacy\, for the sake of self-legitimation. Ilia Chavchavadze’s literary texts have been interpreted in various\, often mutually exclusive ways. \nVarious issues related to Ilia Chavchavadze\, his times and his legacy will be discussed within the Georgian and international context: Ilia and cultural\, national\, ideological\, political and religious discourses in Georgia; Ilia and the problems of interpretation of literary text; sacralisation of cultural figures in Europe and in Georgia; transnational approach to national movements and their leaders; Georgia and Europe since the early 20th century. \nWorking languages: Georgian\, English. \nTime: October 24-25. \nVenue: Book House “Ligamus” \n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

The event\, hosted by Ilia State University on October 23rd\, attracted attention of the faculty members and triggered active discussions. DESCRIPTION:On October 25\, at 19:00\, at Ilia State University theatre\, a popular performance called Socrates Now by Yannis Simonides will be held. The performance commemorates the 25th anniversary of Georgia-Greece diplomatic relations. \nPlato’s timeless classic comes to life in a celebrated theatrical experience that captures the essence of Socratic ethic in a play that amazes which amazes the audience with its humor and liveliness. \nYannis Simonides is an Emi Award winner. “Restless\, humorous\, brilliant and fascinating\,” this is how ”Odyssey Magazine’’ (the USA) adorned the performer\, whereas ”Luxembourger Wort” said about the lead performer’s acting “the virtuoso inspired performance.” \nEvent is organized by the Embassy of Greece in Georgia in cooperation with Ilia State University. \n“Socrates Now” has held its 450 performances in more than 20 countries. \nDate and time: 25 October\, 19:00 \nVenue: Iliauni Theatre (Chavchavadze Ave. N32). \nAll are welcome to attend the event.   \n\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

DESCRIPTION:On October 26\, at 18:00\, Professor at Humboldt University Jörg Baberowski will deliver a public lecture on the topic “Between Fear and Awe–the Soviet Union in the Modern Era “at G106 room of Ilia State University (ISU). \n Regarding the Speaker  \nJörg Baberowski is a German historian and professor of East European History at Humboldt university of Berlin. He specializes in the era of Stalin\, in particular\, the history of violence of that era\, genocide and terror again the eastern and central European people. The professor is also an author of a great number of books and articles.
