SUMMARY:A Unique Photo Exhibition of the Early 20th Century at Ilia State University
DESCRIPTION:On September 23\, at 2:00 p.m.\, the Soviet Past Research Laboratory (Sovlab) will launch a photo exhibition at Ilia State University featuring previously unknown photos from the Nikoladze-Gambashidze family collection\, curated by eminent Georgian photographer Guram Tsibakhashvili. \nThe glass negatives that Sovlab acquired from one of the descendants of the family\, depict some of the key political events of the beginning of the 20th century\, including the Georgian independence period. \nDuring the 70 years of Georgia’s stay in the Soviet Union\, the Soviet totalitarian system systematically eliminated not only undesirable individuals but also visual material depicting non-Soviet reality and events\, which did not correspond to official propaganda narratives. The Soviet regime aimed to create a new Soviet reality and erase the memory of non-Soviet\, non-totalitarian existence. \nThe Soviet Russian occupation regime kept the photographs and films depicting various key events of the political or public life of independent Georgia in the archives or took them to Moscow as “evidence.”  As a result\, many such events have vanished from collective memory or survived only in fragments despite being captured in photographs and film tapes at the time. \nIn order to even partially fill the gaps in memory\, the previously completely unknown photo heritage of the Nikoladze-Gambashidze family is invaluable. \nNiko Nikoladze\, one of the key figures in the history of Georgia’s European aspirations\, was passionate about photography and passed on his knowledge of this art to his children: Giorgi\, Tamar\, and Rusudan. Giorgi Nikoladze\, a pioneer of the Georgian scientific school of mathematics\, engineering\, mountaineering\, and gymnastics\, was married to Georgeta Gambashidze\, whose father\, Vakhtang Gambashidze – a doctor\, educator\, and political figure\, was also passionate about photography\, and his daughter also followed in his footsteps. Almost all the key events of the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century came through the lens of the Nikoladze-Gambashidze family. \nThe exhibition and discussion are held within the framework of “The Memory Project:  Face-based Countering of Soviet Nostalgia and Russian Historical Revisionism\,” organized by Ilia State University. The organizations involved:  Harvard University\, Soviet Past Research Laboratory (Sovlab)\, Institute for Development of Freedom of Information\, Museum of Georgian Literature\, PEN Georgia\, Iliauni Center for Memory Studies\, Writers’ House\, and the National Foundation of Georgia. The project is funded by the US Embassy in Georgia. \nDate/Time: September 23\, 2:00 p.m. \nLocation:  Ilia State University\, Building A (lobby)\, 32 Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue \nEveryone interested is welcome. \n2024

SUMMARY:CALL FOR PAPERS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE LEGACY OF CATHOLIC MISSIONS RELIGIOUS FRAGMENTATION AND CONNECTEDNESS IN GEORGIA IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES
DESCRIPTION:September 10-13\, 2024 Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, Georgia \nWe cordially invite colleagues to submit paper proposals for the international conference on the Legacy of Catholic Missions. Religious Fragmentation and Connectedness in Georgia in the 18th and 19th Centuries\, to be held at Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, 10-13 September 2024. \nThe Georgian Orthodox Church of late antiquity and the Catholic missions of early modern Georgia relied on the same text corpora comprising the old Georgian translations of the Bible\, the earliest examples of which date back to 5th-century manuscripts. Application of the same religious texts by different Christian denominations created a specific model of religious fragmentation and connectedness\, especially during the transition period from the Middle Ages to modernity. The liturgical practices of different periods and stages of religious inculturation in Georgia played a significant role in the emancipation and the development of the Georgian language and its functions. The trends of fragmentation and connectedness were influenced by the coexistence of three different rites of the Catholic missions in Georgia: Rito Latino\, Rito Armenio Catolico and Rito Georgiano Catolico. \nThe conference aims to broadly explore and discuss trends of fragmentation and connectedness between the Orthodox Church and Roman Catholicism\, as well as between the rites of the Catholic missions in Georgia. \nWe welcome contributions on topics related to\, but not limited to: \n\nEastern Catholic Churches\nMissionary Linguistics and Textual Legacy of Catholic Missions\nProcess of Catholic Inculturation from the Perspective of Early Global History and Modernity\n\nAll interested applicants should submit an abstract of roughly 300 words and a current CV to the e-mail address lecamiconference@iliauni.edu.ge. \nThe deadline for submissions is June 16 2024 \nSelected participants will be notified by June 26 2024 \nThe working language is English and Georgian \nParticipation in the conference is free of charge \nAny inquiries should be sent to lecamiconference@iliauni.edu.ge

SUMMARY:NOVEL HYPOTHESIS OF ORIGIN OF LIFE: QUADRUPLEX WORLD
DESCRIPTION:University’s Faculty of Natural Sciences and Medicine and Senior Researcher in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Ohio State University (USA)\, will present a seminar titled “A New Hypothesis of the Origin of Life: A Quadruplex World.” \nOverview of the Topic: \nThe widely accepted RNA world hypothesis for the origin of life is paradoxical and struggles to address critical questions without contradicting the principle of evolutionary continuity. In this seminar\, the speaker will introduce an alternative hypothesis – the quadruplex world. This hypothesis transforms the origin of life into a fully analyzable scientific issue\, offering explanations for (1) the emergence of primitive life forms\, (2) the development of Darwinian evolution\, and (3) the gradual transformation of these life forms into contemporary biology – all while upholding the principle of evolutionary continuity. \nReferences: \n[1] Kankia B. 2021. SUMMARY:Origami Crane Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On December 22\, at 12:00\, the origami crane workshop will be held for students in Hall G106 at Ilia State University. \nAs part of the photo exhibition “Atomic Bombings of Japan\,” organized by Ilia State University\, and the Nagasaki National Peace Memorial Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims\, origami cranes made by students will be featured in the exhibition space. \nRisa Uchida\, a Japanese language instructor at Ilia State University\, will conduct the workshop. She is in Georgia as a volunteer with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). \nAbout Origami Cranes \nIn Japan\, cranes are revered as lucky birds. For centuries\, the Japanese have folded origami cranes\, believing that these paper creations can grant their wishes from the gods. \nAt the end of World War II\, a Japanese girl\, a victim of the Hiroshima bombing\, fell ill due to radiation-induced diseases. Disturbed by the pain\, she decided to craft 1000 paper cranes\, believing that doing so would bring her healing from the gods. Unfortunately\, the girl died\, but her story gained widespread recognition\, turning the origami crane into a symbol of peace. Today\, people worldwide\, not only in Japan but also in many other countries\, fold paper cranes to pray for peace. \nTo join the workshop\, please register by 18:00 on December 19. The first 100 registered students will be able to attend. \nFollow the link to register \nWorking Language: Japanese (Consecutive translation into Georgian will be provided) \nDate and Time: December 22\, 12:00 \nLocation:  Ilia State University\, Building G\, Hall 106\, 1 Giorgi Tsereteli Street \n2023 \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Changing Tides in the Black Sea Region: Strengthening Security\, Strategic Connectivity\, and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:The Black Sea region looms increasingly large as the locus of great power military\, political\, and economic competition. Russia has chosen the region as a focal point of its challenge to the Western security order\, as its 2008 invasion of Georgia and its 2014 and 2022 invasions of Ukraine make clear. Geopolitically\, the region is where the West\, Russia\, and the wider Middle East come into contact. As countries like Ukraine\, Moldova\, and Georgia seek EU membership\, Russia looks to destabilize them. Turkey aims to retain its good standing with NATO\, preserve its ties with Russia\, and assert its interests in the Syrian civil war. The region also holds considerable importance as an economic and energy transit zone\, with the West\, Russia\, and China launching transportation and energy infrastructure projects there. Finally\, Black Sea states struggle to build political\, economic\, and social resilience in the face of Russian attempts to destabilize them and subvert their sovereignty. The goal of this conference is to advance understanding among regional and Western scholars and policymakers on the challenges and opportunities the Black Sea region presents. \nVenue: Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, Georgia \nG. Tsereteli Street 1\, University Building G\, Conference Room 106\, First Floor. \nRegistration: Open to public. Registration required. Register here. \nConference dates: June 28-29 \n2023 \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
