SUMMARY:Workshop and Concert “On the Trail of Polish Sonorism”
DESCRIPTION:On November 10\, Ilia State University will host a workshop and concert in Auditorium B201\, organized by the Music Centre at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. \n\nAt 11:00\, Polish performers Ewa Liebchen and Emilia Karolina Sitarz will hold a workshop introducing the audience to the extended\, sonoristic possibilities of the flute and piano.\nAt 18:00\, the concert “On the Trail of Polish Sonorism” will begin. The program will feature masterpieces of Polish Sonorism alongside a new work composed specifically for this duo by young Georgian composer Elene Gogodze.\n\nThe concert seeks to engage young composers with Sonorism\, a Polish music movement that was predominant in the 1960s. It was the time of sonoristic experiments by composers such as Krzysztof Penderecki\, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki\, Kazimierz Serocki\, or Witold Szalonek. This style of music focuses on the origin of sound\, its tonal color\, duration\, and sonority. These elements continue to be of significant interest to composers today. \nDate/Time: November 10\, at 11:00 and 18:00 \nLocation: Ilia State University\, Auditorium B201\, 32 Ilia Chavchavadze Ave. \nEveryone interested is welcome.

SUMMARY:The management of Byzantine monuments in modern Greece (19th-20th centuries)
DESCRIPTION:October 15\, We are pleased to announce a lecture of Dionysis Mourelatos (Athens\, Greece) to be presented at the Seminar of the Center for Medieval Studies \n“The management of Byzantine monuments in modern Greece (19th-20th centuries)” \nGreece has been grappling with the issue of “national continuity” since gaining its independence\, addressing it in various ways. K. Paparrigopoulos\, a history professor at the University of Athens in the mid-19th century\, first expressed the ideas behind the young state’s identity by introducing his threefold scheme (Antiquity\, Byzantium\, and Modern Greece) for national history. The incorporation of the history of the Byzantine Empire in the ‘national’ narrative was deemed necessary as early as the nineteenth century\, and the study of Byzantine art and its incorporation in what was perceived as the national past was an essential step in this direction. Following the Greek-Turkish War between 1919 and 1922 in Asia Minor\, the conventional historiographical perception persisted. In the post-war world\, during the Cold War\, the perception of Byzantium became a new field of confrontation between East and West. \nVia zoom \nTime 19 PM (CET) \nLanguage English \nJoin Zoom Meeting \n\nhttps://iliauni-edu-ge.zoom.us/j/86191264222?pwd=FlaauKh9Bw5t4pZrCL9AIB6DzPcFvP.1\n\nMeeting ID: 861 9126 4222\nPasscode: 688611 \n2024

SUMMARY:"The Early Universe Viewed in Gravitational Waves" – Lecture by Professor Tinatin Kakhniashvili
DESCRIPTION:On October 15\, at 17:00\, in auditorium G106 at Ilia State University\, Iliauni Professor Tinatin Kakhniashvili will deliver a lecture titled “Early Universe Viewed in Gravitational Waves”. \n A Brief Overview of the Topic \nGravitational waves offer an opportunity to observe the early universe at energy levels far beyond what can be achieved on Earth – several orders of magnitude greater than those reached by the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. These waves provide insights into a period of the universe’s history that cannot be studied through electromagnetic radiation (radio\, infrared\, visible light\, microwaves\, X-rays\, ultraviolet\, and gamma rays). In this lecture\, the speaker will discuss the potential of gravitational waves and how they can help verify the fundamental laws of physics. \n About the Speaker \nTinatin Kakhniashvili\, a full professor of astrophysics at Ilia State University\, is actively involved in scientific collaborations with international research centers\, including the McWilliams Center for Cosmology (USA)\, NORDITA (Sweden)\, and Pitt-PACC (USA). She is also an associate research professor at Carnegie Mellon University (USA). Currently\, she leads three projects funded by NASA and the USA National Science Foundation\, including the 2024 NASA-funded Collaborative Research: Gravitational Waves as Messengers from the Early Universe. \nTinatin Kakhniashvili previously worked as a research scientist at international centers such as ICTP & SISSA (Italy) and CCPP (NYU). Additionally\, she has served as a visiting professor at several universities in the USA\, Canada\, and Europe\, including Rutgers University\, Kansas State University\, Carnegie Mellon University\, Geneva University\, and Laurentian University. \nRead more at: https://shorturl.at/Rt6vB \nA discussion will take place after the lecture. \nWorking Language: Georgian \nDate and Time: October 15\, 17:00 \nLocation: Auditorium G106\, Ilia State University\, G. Tsereteli St. N1 \nEveryone interested is welcome. \n2024

SUMMARY:"Unity in Diversity: The Malay World\, Its History and Culture" - Lecture by Professor Tatyana A. Denisov
DESCRIPTION:On October 15\, at 16:00\, in the S201/202 auditorium of Ilia State University\, at the permanent seminar of the Giorgi Tsereteli Institute of Oriental Studies\, Visiting Scholar Professor Tatyana A. Denisova from the Center for Advanced Studies on Islam\, Science\, and Civilization (CASIS)\, University Technology Malaysia\, will deliver a lecture on “Unity in Diversity: The Malay World\, Its History and Culture.” \nAnnotation \nSoutheast Asia\, including the Malay world\, is one of the most ancient centers of human civilization. This region\, known since early times\, is mentioned in various ancient historical sources. \nThe geographic position of the Malay Archipelago played a fundamental role in its historical development. Located at the convergence of two major sea routes\, the archipelago was connected to the great markets of India and China by the annual monsoon wind systems. \nOne of the most significant factors in the development of trade in the Malay Archipelago was its rich natural and mineral resources\, which provided a wide variety of products for sale and exchange. \nThe main feature of this region is its multinational and multicultural nature. It has long been called an open world. “Unity in diversity” became the main principle and driving force of this civilization. As a major center of world trade at the crossroads of key trade routes\, the Malay world became a melting pot of many cultures and traditions – Indian\, Chinese\, Muslim\, European\, and Malay. \nThe openness and diversity of the region are reflected in both the history and written heritage of the Malays. \nWorking Language: English \nDate and Time: October 15\, 16:00 \nLocation: Auditorium S201/202\, Ilia State University\, G. Tsereteli St. N3 \nEveryone interested is welcome.

SUMMARY:Recalling Avant-garde Moments\, Reconnecting Avant-garde Scenes International Conference Dedicated to the Centenary of the H2SO4
DESCRIPTION:9-11 October 2024\, Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, Georgia \nHistorical avant-garde contains forgotten moments and scenes that still need to be rediscovered or reconnected with other\, central or peripheral scenes of the European avant-garde. Avant-garde moments would not occur in different national cultures without the strong desire to connected with the wider web of aesthetic searches and experimentation\, happening in various European cultural loci. However\, due to historical changes\, some moments/scenes were disconnected from the web\, staying unrecalled for decades. \nOne such forgotten moment was that of the Tbilisi modernism/avant-garde (1917-1918) and the Futurist group H2SO4 (1920s)\, which has been erased from the Georgian cultural memory by the Soviet power while the country was disconnected from European cultural context. In the post-Soviet decades\, Georgia had to reclaim this legacy. The present centenary of the Futurist group and journal H2SO4 (1924) is a good reason for discussing different\, though often comparable avant-garde cultural experiences. \nUnderstanding Avant-Garde as a constellation of different moments we will examine the specificity of each locality in their transcultural entanglement. To reconstruct these scenes\, the conference will elaborate on networks\, relationships\, groups\, and collaborations\, on their coming together\, forming\, evaporating\, and diverging again. What is the transformational power of Avant-Garde alliances\, past and present\, within the artistic and the societal field? How have ways and forms of life been shaped throughout the Avant-Gardes? What are the gendered social and spatial structures\, in which groups test and create forms of community through their artistic practices? The aim here will be to render visible realities of those groups and alliances that have not yet been acknowledged\, due to geographical\, institutional and/or political conditions. \nThe conference is organised by the Institute of Comparative Literature and the Centre for Advanced Studies\, Ilia State University\, in cooperation with the Institute of Philosophy and Art History\, Leuphana University of Lüneburg\, Germany. \nThe Plenary Lectures/Talks: \nGünter Berghaus\, University of Bristol\nInternational Futurism and Its Cross-Fertilizations in the Historical Avant-garde \nArtist Talk: Beate Söntgen\, Leuphana University of Lüneburg\, with Anuk Beluga & Mari Kalabegashvili \nGia Jokhadze\, Ilia State University\nMandelstamiana: The Fragments from the Cultural History of Russia and Georgia\nLecture / Book Presentation \nSee the Programme for the detailed information.

SUMMARY:A Unique Photo Exhibition of the Early 20th Century at Ilia State University
DESCRIPTION:On September 23\, at 2:00 p.m.\, the Soviet Past Research Laboratory (Sovlab) will launch a photo exhibition at Ilia State University featuring previously unknown photos from the Nikoladze-Gambashidze family collection\, curated by eminent Georgian photographer Guram Tsibakhashvili. \nThe glass negatives that Sovlab acquired from one of the descendants of the family\, depict some of the key political events of the beginning of the 20th century\, including the Georgian independence period. \nDuring the 70 years of Georgia’s stay in the Soviet Union\, the Soviet totalitarian system systematically eliminated not only undesirable individuals but also visual material depicting non-Soviet reality and events\, which did not correspond to official propaganda narratives. The Soviet regime aimed to create a new Soviet reality and erase the memory of non-Soviet\, non-totalitarian existence. \nThe Soviet Russian occupation regime kept the photographs and films depicting various key events of the political or public life of independent Georgia in the archives or took them to Moscow as “evidence.”  As a result\, many such events have vanished from collective memory or survived only in fragments despite being captured in photographs and film tapes at the time. \nIn order to even partially fill the gaps in memory\, the previously completely unknown photo heritage of the Nikoladze-Gambashidze family is invaluable. \nNiko Nikoladze\, one of the key figures in the history of Georgia’s European aspirations\, was passionate about photography and passed on his knowledge of this art to his children: Giorgi\, Tamar\, and Rusudan. Giorgi Nikoladze\, a pioneer of the Georgian scientific school of mathematics\, engineering\, mountaineering\, and gymnastics\, was married to Georgeta Gambashidze\, whose father\, Vakhtang Gambashidze – a doctor\, educator\, and political figure\, was also passionate about photography\, and his daughter also followed in his footsteps. Almost all the key events of the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century came through the lens of the Nikoladze-Gambashidze family. \nThe exhibition and discussion are held within the framework of “The Memory Project:  Face-based Countering of Soviet Nostalgia and Russian Historical Revisionism\,” organized by Ilia State University. The organizations involved:  Harvard University\, Soviet Past Research Laboratory (Sovlab)\, Institute for Development of Freedom of Information\, Museum of Georgian Literature\, PEN Georgia\, Iliauni Center for Memory Studies\, Writers’ House\, and the National Foundation of Georgia. The project is funded by the US Embassy in Georgia. \nDate/Time: September 23\, 2:00 p.m. \nLocation:  Ilia State University\, Building A (lobby)\, 32 Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue \nEveryone interested is welcome. \n2024

SUMMARY:CALL FOR PAPERS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE LEGACY OF CATHOLIC MISSIONS RELIGIOUS FRAGMENTATION AND CONNECTEDNESS IN GEORGIA IN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURIES
DESCRIPTION:September 10-13\, 2024 Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, Georgia \nWe cordially invite colleagues to submit paper proposals for the international conference on the Legacy of Catholic Missions. Religious Fragmentation and Connectedness in Georgia in the 18th and 19th Centuries\, to be held at Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, 10-13 September 2024. \nThe Georgian Orthodox Church of late antiquity and the Catholic missions of early modern Georgia relied on the same text corpora comprising the old Georgian translations of the Bible\, the earliest examples of which date back to 5th-century manuscripts. Application of the same religious texts by different Christian denominations created a specific model of religious fragmentation and connectedness\, especially during the transition period from the Middle Ages to modernity. The liturgical practices of different periods and stages of religious inculturation in Georgia played a significant role in the emancipation and the development of the Georgian language and its functions. The trends of fragmentation and connectedness were influenced by the coexistence of three different rites of the Catholic missions in Georgia: Rito Latino\, Rito Armenio Catolico and Rito Georgiano Catolico. \nThe conference aims to broadly explore and discuss trends of fragmentation and connectedness between the Orthodox Church and Roman Catholicism\, as well as between the rites of the Catholic missions in Georgia. \nWe welcome contributions on topics related to\, but not limited to: \n\nEastern Catholic Churches\nMissionary Linguistics and Textual Legacy of Catholic Missions\nProcess of Catholic Inculturation from the Perspective of Early Global History and Modernity\n\nAll interested applicants should submit an abstract of roughly 300 words and a current CV to the e-mail address lecamiconference@iliauni.edu.ge. \nThe deadline for submissions is June 16 2024 \nSelected participants will be notified by June 26 2024 \nThe working language is English and Georgian \nParticipation in the conference is free of charge \nAny inquiries should be sent to lecamiconference@iliauni.edu.ge

SUMMARY:NOVEL HYPOTHESIS OF ORIGIN OF LIFE: QUADRUPLEX WORLD
DESCRIPTION:University’s Faculty of Natural Sciences and Medicine and Senior Researcher in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the Ohio State University (USA)\, will present a seminar titled “A New Hypothesis of the Origin of Life: A Quadruplex World.” \nOverview of the Topic: \nThe widely accepted RNA world hypothesis for the origin of life is paradoxical and struggles to address critical questions without contradicting the principle of evolutionary continuity. In this seminar\, the speaker will introduce an alternative hypothesis – the quadruplex world. This hypothesis transforms the origin of life into a fully analyzable scientific issue\, offering explanations for (1) the emergence of primitive life forms\, (2) the development of Darwinian evolution\, and (3) the gradual transformation of these life forms into contemporary biology – all while upholding the principle of evolutionary continuity. \nReferences: \n[1] Kankia B. 2021.
