SUMMARY:Public Lecture by Katarzyna Sidło
DESCRIPTION:Title: \nWorking in sales\, medieval Muslim style. A short history of some of the most controversial commutative contracts in Islamic economics \nAnnotation \nBayʿsalam/salaf – as sale of an object with a future delivery and on-spot payment – is arguably one of the most curious ones among commutative contracts deemed ḥalāl in Islamic economics. Being a sale of an object not in the possession of the seller—more often than not due to its nonexistence at the time when the contract is being concluded—and with the resulting uncertainty over their ability to deliver the subject-matter\, the transaction should theoretically be forbidden under the rules governing gharar (exorbitant risk/uncertainty)sales. However\, most scholars consider salam contract permissible on account of a ḥadīth\, according to which it was allowed by the Prophet himself\, as well as the belief that in this particular case “the requirements of law yielded (rakhkhasa) in face of the people’s need for it”( al-Sarakhsi\, al-Mabsut\, vol. 9). Against this background\, during the talk I will trace the provenience of bayʿsalam and explore the collective thought process that led to its establishment as one of the core Islamic financial contracts. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Workshop “Grounded Theory” for Doctoral Students and Young Researchers
DESCRIPTION:Ilia State University’s International Doctoral School offers a workshop on Grounded Theory (GT) for doctoral students and young researchers. This workshop interactively examines the basic ideas and concepts of GT methodology in theory and practice. In the first phase\, we will discuss GT’s philosophical origins as well as its main methodological perspectives. Then we address key issues such as what is a GT research question and how to phrase questions that are appropriate to the GT imperative of openness in order to discuss the main features of a GT study design. In a third phase\, we will analyze potential challenges and pitfalls of the research practice. GT concepts that might seem blurry\, e.g. “saturation of data” and “theoretical sampling”\, will be clarified.\nUpon completion of the workshop\, an attendance certificate will be issued for each participant. \nMandatory Reading: Corbin\, Juliet/Strauss\, Anselm (1990): Grounded Theory Research. Procedures\,\nCanons\, and Evaluation Criteria. In: Qualitative Sociology 13/1\, pp 3-21.\nParticipants of the workshop will be provided with a copy upon registration. \nVenue: Ilia State University\, E Building\, E-207\, Cholokashvili Ave. 3/5\, 0162 Tbilisi \nDates and Times: \n\nMonday\, February 10\, 2020; 10:00-14:30\nTuesday\, February 11\, 2020; 10:00-14:30\nWednesday\, February 12\, 2020; 10:00-14:30\n\nInstructor: Dr. Yvonne Franke (Georg-August-University of Göttingen\, Faculty of Social Sciences) \nLanguage of Instruction: English \nMaximum Number of Participants: 20 \nRegistration: Prior registration is required and the principle of priority applies. SUMMARY:Talk to the Market- Lecture by Nikoloz Gogochuri
DESCRIPTION:On December 26th\, Nikoloz Gogochuri- serial entrepreneur and a founder of the startup VRex Immersive will deliver a lecture in the frames of the Zoomout Pre-Accelerator’s programme. \nThe title of the lecture– Talk to the Market. \nIt should be mentioned that VRex Immersive is the very first startup company in the world\, which enables the tourism industry to use virtual reality. \nThe pre-acceleration programme is delivered in the frames of the British Council’s Creative Spark: Higher Education Enterprise Programme in collaboration with the UWE Bristol. \nThe programme is also partnered with the Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA) and the US Embassy grant project \,\,Paving the Way to Knowledge-based Economy: Enhancing University Research and Entrepreneurial Skills in Georgia”. \nThe program is built on the recommendations and syllabus of Europe’s most experienced B2B accelerator Startup Wise Guys. \nFacilitator’s Bio \nI have been an entrepreneur since 2004\, when I founded my first company. It was an animation studio focused on architectural animation. Since then I have worked in CG/VFX industry and also co-founded the first CG association in Georgia. I have been working on many projects aimed at the development of tech fields in Georgia including educational standards\, a workshop series for artists\, and the first ever computer graphics festival. I have helped create more than 10 vocational education curricula for colleges in the technology field. \nSince 2015 I have been fully focused on my current venture: VRex Immersive\, a startup creating VR marketing platform for the travel industry\, enabling travel professionals to use VR content for sales and marketing. We are one of the first companies in the world to work on VR solutions for the travel industry and have been selected as a top 50 startups out of 7\,000 by Startup Grind and Google for startups in 2018. \nKnowledge sharing is one of the most important aspects of entrepreneurship in my opinion. For this reason I have been a part of numerous mentorship programs and have mentored dozens of young entrepreneurs along the way. At the same time\, I am always looking for new knowledge and mentorship from my peers as well as more experienced entrepreneurs. This hunger for knowledge motivates me to move forward. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Ilia State University Science Week 2019: Presentation of Savle Tsereteli Institute of Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:On December 19\, Giorgi Kheoshvili\, a member of the Savle Tsereteli Institute of Philosophy\, will deliver a lecture on “The Problem of Religious Anti-Semitism in Russian Religious Philosophy of the Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries” \nAbstract \nAnti-Semitism is one of the most dangerous and widespread form of religious and national intolerance rooted in historical Christianity. Anti-Semitism has taken many forms in different countries – religious and psychological intolerance\, segregation\, forced exile of Jews\, genocide\, abuse\, etc. The fact that Russian thinking was mainly concerned with the problems of the history of philosophy during the nineteenth century was greatly promoted by the active interest of Russian religious thinkers in the Jewish problem. Some Russian intellectuals sought to determine Russia’s future in the context of the religious philosophy of history. Those who intend to use a religious basis for the philosophy of history cannot bypass the question of God’s chosen people\, whose history has been central to religious events. Furthermore\, the Russian national-messianist ideology\, developed in the nineteenth century\, would eventually oppose the religious messianism of the biblical nation. This issue became a test of religious tolerance for Russian religious thinkers. Unfortunately\, many Russian thinkers failed the test with dignity. The purpose of Kheoshvili’s research is to highlight some of the manifestations of religious-worldview intolerance towards the Jews that have been raised by prominent Russian religious thinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries (including V. Soloviev\, N. Berdyaev\, S. Bulgakov\, P. Florenski and Al. Losev). \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
