SUMMARY:CONFERENCE - "How To discuss Subaltern in Post-Social Societies? Culture\, History\, Politics"
DESCRIPTION:“The term “Subaltern”\, introduced by Italian theoretician Antonio Gramsci\, is commonly used to designate the “subordinated”\, “inferior” social groups or categories of people. Since 1980’s it has become the central concept for Post-Colonial and Post-Imperial studies. From then its meaning has been widened and extended across all social groups and particular persons regarded – based on their social\, ethnic\, racial\, religious\, gender or sexual affiliations – inferior in the social hierarchy.\nIn contemporary theoretical discourses Subaltern signifies those social groups that exist outside hegemony\, groups whose presence is absent from the official culture – “their voices aren’t heard”. Therefore\, on the level of discourse their existence is described from not-their-own\, other’s perspective. Closely related to this term\, another meaning is used In Post-Colonial and Post-Imperial contexts in connection to the relationship between former Empire and Colony but also to the relationship between hegemonic West and the East or\, in general – “Third World Countries”: Subaltern refers not only to a particular social group but rather to Post-Colonial/Post-Imperial country or a nation which remains in a certain symbiotic relationship to former Colonial/Imperial power and shapes its identity through the stereotypes that have already been suggested by hegemonic power. Thus\, it reproduces its subalternity.\nThe aim of workshop is to bring topics connected to theoretical interpretations of Subaltern and other related themes into Post-socialist\, especially Georgian context and to discuss potential prospects of research in this field.”                                 \nThe conference will bring together Georgian and Foreign researchers\, professors\, students\, visual artists\, photographers and writers.\n \nFull program is available here.\n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Public Lecture "Literary origins of Georgian feast: Cosmopolitan poetics of national tradition" by Professor Harsha Ram of University of California
DESCRIPTION:Ilia State University Institute of Social and Cultural Studies is organizing a public lecture “Literary origins of Georgian feast: Cosmopolitan poetics of national tradition” on June 24\, Wednesday\, 19:00\, at ISU Book House “Ligamus” to be presented by Professor Harsha Ram of University of California (Berkeley). The lecture will be held in English\, with simultaneous translation in Georgian. \nHarsha Ram – Associate Professor of Department of Comparative Literature\, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures of Berkley University (University of California). Harsha Ram’s academic activity and interest is scattered over numerous disciplines\, centuries and nearly half of the world\, including Russian\, Georgian\, Indian and Italian literatures\, as well as comparative modernism and nationalism\, and imperialism and cosmopolitism theories. His works consider Russian and European romanticisms\, symbolism and avant-garde. His recent publications include “The Imperial Sublime: A Russian Poetics of Empire” (2003). His forthcoming book is entitled “City of Crossroads: Tiflis Modernism and the Russian-Georgian Encounter”. \n“Literary origins of Georgian feast: Cosmopolitan poetics of national tradition” \nBy combination of festivity\, drinking and toasting Georgian feast has gained status ofa national feature. But how unique the Georgian feast really is? It would seem that the Georgian toast practice isproduct a deep literary exchange that goes far beyond the Caucasus region and is pointing to the romantic poetry in Russian and British traditions. Study of this genealogy shows how “national” customs were shaped during nineteenth-century from the pagan social interactions between Russian and Georgian elites. Thus\, my lecture is a contribution to the ongoing debate on correlations among national\, imperial and cosmopolitan as it attempts to demonstrate how history of literature and philology can conduct a productive dialogue with the post-Soviet anthropology and “imperial return” of Russian historiography. \nTime: 24 June\, 19:00\nVenue: Book house “Ligamus” \nAttendance is free. \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:ILIAUNI LITERARY CONTEST WINNER TO BE ANNOUNCED
DESCRIPTION:On May 14\, at 19:00\, at Ilia State University (ISU) Book House Ligamus\, we are inviting you to attend the birthday party of Iliauni Literary Club at which the winner of Iliauni Literary Contest will be announced. \nThe Literary Contest of ISU has existed 5 years. In 2010\, the academic board of the university made a decision to foster the development of novel writing practice in Georgia through introducing a literary award for the best novel. \nSo far the prize has been awarded to 4 nominees. In 2010\, the prize was granted to Aka Morchiladze for her novel “Mamluki”\, while in 2011\, Zaza Burchuladze received the same prize for his “Inflatable Angel.” In 2012\, the prize was not issued; however\, in 2013\, the pecuniary award was shared between Ana Kordzaia-Samadashvili for her novel “Who Killed Chaika” and Jaba Zarkua for his novel “Readers Must Die.” \nIn 2014\, the academic board of ISU decided to issue a prize for the best translation of a foreign language novel. The basis of this decision was the opinion that Georgian translations of brilliant foreign language literary works make worthwhile contributions to the development of novel writing with this contribution being not smaller than that of made by writing of original novels. An author of the best translation published for the last 5 years will be announced as the winner of the contest. \nThe novels of 7 finalists presented at Iliauni Literary Contest are as follows: \n\nClaude Simon “La Route des Flandres\,” Publishing House Intellect\, translators Ilia Gasviani\, Anzor Abjandadze\nOrhan Pamuk “My Name is Red\,” Bakur Sulakauri Publishing House\, translator Lia Chlaidze\nKnut Hamsun “Mysteries\,” Bakur Sulakauri Publishing House\, translator Tamar Kvijinadze\nVirginia Wolf\, “To the Lighthouse\,” Bakur Sulakauri Publishing House\, translator Lela Dumbadze\nRobet Musil\, “The Man Without Qualities\,” volume II\, Diogene Publishing House\, translator Maia Badridze\nWilliam Faulkner\, “Flags in the Dust\,” Diogene Publishing House\, translator Zaza Chiladze\nUmberto Eco The Name of the Rose\, Diogene Publishing House\, translator Khatuna Tskhadaze\n\nThe winner will be awarded Iliauni literary Prize of 10\,000 GEL. SUMMARY:EU-Georgia cooperation through Neighborhood Instrument and bilateral cooperation
DESCRIPTION:The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) was developed in 2004 with the objective of avoiding the emergence of new dividing lines between the enlarged EU and its neighbours; also to strengthen the prosperity\, stability and security of all. \nHowever\, over the past years\, there has not been too much stability nor security in the Eastern Partnership region. Growing realisation that the Eastern Partnership framework did not adequately diversify relations with different countries resulted by a new European Neighbourhood Instrument in 2014; which provides bilateral assistance to Georgia for 2014-2017around €400 million. In May 2015 Riga Summit will take place\, where decision on Georgian visa-free access to the EU is also expected. \nBesides ENI\, Georgia can benefit from other EU programs (Erasmus+\, Horizon 2020 etc) but also from bilateral cooperation (for example development cooperation aid from Estonia\, Poland etc. for educational institutes\, NGOs\, municipalities). \nWorking language: English. \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
