SUMMARY:PUBLIC FILM SHOWING AND DISCUSSION: “9 March: Bloody Tbilisi”
DESCRIPTION:In early March 1956 thousands of people in Georgia took to the streets to protest Khrushchev’s “Secret Speech” and the beginning of “de-Stalinization”. \nThese were the first large-scale public protests in the USSR in nearly 30 years. On the night of March 9 the Soviet Army opened fire. \nThe March 1956 events in Georgia present a paradox: in a republic that suffered heavily under Stalin’s rule\, citizens protested in support of Stalin. The events presaged the later uprisings in Hungary in October 1956\, and became a watershed event in Georgian and Soviet history. \nA discussion of the March 1956 events will take place following a viewing of the short film “9 March: Bloody Tbilisi” (20 min) produced by the Archives Administration of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia. \nModerator: Timothy Blauvelt\, Ilia State University Associate Professor \nParticipants: \n\nLasha Bakradze\, Director of the State Museumof Georgian Literature and Ilia State University Professor\nOliver Reisner\, Ilia State University Professor\nDr. Vladimer Luarsabishvili\, Archives Administration\, Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia\n\nLanguage: English \nMarch 9\, 2017 \n17:00 at Ilia State University\, Room A101 \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:The Leadership Academy for Development Program
DESCRIPTION:The Leadership Academy for Development (LAD)\, at Stanford University’s Center on Democracy\, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL)\, the Economic Policy Research Center (EPRC)\, and Ilia State University are opening the application intake for the “The Role of Public Policy in Private Sector Development” workshop which will take place in Tbilisi\, Georgia in the first week of March 2017. \nAbout the LAD Program \nGeneral Information \nThe Leadership Academy for Development (LAD) is an executive-level training program that trains mid-level government officials and business sector leaders from developing countries to help the private sector be a constructive force for economic growth and development. LAD was co-founded by Stanford University’s Center on Democracy\, Development and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) and the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies. For more information about LAD\, please see http://cddrl.fsi.stanford.edu/research/the_leadership_academy_for_development. \nLAD Program in Georgia \nThe LAD Program in Georgia started in January 2016\, the new course will take place in the first week of March 2017 and will be implemented jointly by CDDRL\, the Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) – a local think tank based in Tbilisi\, Georgia. LAD in Georgia is supported by the Ilia State University. \n“The Role of Public Policy in Private Sector Development” workshop is an intensive\, five-day\, executive-level training program that will teach selected participants how to be effective reform leaders\, promoting sound public policies in complex and contentious settings. The LAD Program in Georgia will be led by CDDRL Director\, Francis Fukuyama of Stanford University. \nLAD Training Program Overview \nA driving principle of the LAD curriculum is that policy reform is not like engineering or other technical fields that have discrete skills and clear\, optimal solutions. Instead\, successful reformers must be nimble and weigh a broad range of factors that influence policy outcomes. They must have a solid grasp of country-specific economic\, financial\, political and cultural realities. Most importantly\, they must have a sense of how to set priorities\, sequence actions and build coalitions. LAD provides participants with an analytical framework to build these abilities and operate effectively under adverse conditions. \nLAD courses are based on case studies that are designed to encourage participants to think critically about the key decisions that have led to policy reforms. They are written from the perspective of decision-makers who have designed or executed specific policies and they demonstrate how effective public officials think and act strategically. The case studies show how these leaders address technical obstacles while simultaneously taking into careful consideration the political\, cultural and social constraints to reforms. Also\, the performance of the private sector and its role as either a catalyst or an obstacle to economic growth is closely connected to how well or badly government policies are designed and implemented. LAD provides participants with an analytical framework to build these abilities and operate effectively under adverse conditions. \nAbout the Center on Democracy\, Development\, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) \nThe Center on Democracy\, Development\, and the Rule of Law (CDDRL) at Stanford University engages in research\, training\, teaching\, and organizes intellectual and policy dialogues aimed at increasing public understanding of economic and political development. Founded in 2002 CDDRL has collaborated with scholars\, policymakers\, and practitioners around the world to advance collective knowledge about the linkages between democracy\, sustainable economic development\, human rights and the rule of law. \nAbout the Economic Policy Research Center (EPRC) \nThe Economic Policy Research Center (EPRC) is a think-and do-tank that was founded in Tbilisi\, Georgia in 2002. EPRC is created to build a contemporary economic research capacity in Georgia\, to enhance economic decision making and to be an important voice in economic and policy discussions. EPRC is striving to enhance the quality of economic policy-making in Georgia by fostering high quality\, policy-relevant economic research\, and disseminating it widely to decision-makers in the public and private sectors. Throughout the past decade\, EPRC has earned a reputation of an objective\, reliable and non-partisan source of information on the issues related to economic\, financial and social policies. \nAbout Ilia State University (ISU) \nIlia State University is one of the leading research and educational institutions in Georgia. SUMMARY:ISU SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH REPORT -- TENGIZ ONIANI LABORATORY OF SLEEP-WAKEFULNESS
DESCRIPTION:On December 21\, at 17:00\, at Ilia State University E 207 (Cholokashvili Ave.#3/5)\, within Iliauni report on its scientific-research activities\, scientific-research projects will be presented by Ilia State University (ISU) Scientific-Research Center called Tengiz Oniani Laboratory of Sleep and Wakefulness Study. \nTwo scientific-research reports will be presented. \nA report on the topic of Relationship between the Phases of Sleep-Wake Cycle and Integrative Activities of the Brain will be delivered by associate professor Nikoloz Oniani. \nAnnotation \nOne of the topical issues faced by neuroscientists today is determining the role of sleep is memorization. This interest is provoked by multiple contradicting data in terms of this issue in scientific literature. The issue subjected to extensive research was the effect of sleep on implicate memory processes in rats\, during which they used total sleep deprivation and an active isolation test. \nThe final outcomes showed that: \n1. Premeditated total non-pharmacological deprivation does not have any effect on an active memorization process; \n2. Post-session total non-pharmacological sleep deprivation does not affect remembering the test processes; \n3. A memorization process does not accelerate sleep initiation. \nOn the basis of the analyses of outcomes\, it has been assumed that: \n1. Sleep has no specific role in consolidation of implicit memory traces; \n2. Sleep deficit has no negative effect on the memorization process and remembering studied material; \n3. Wakefulness is more important to consolidate memorization and memory traces than sleep; \nOne of the most topical issues faced by neuroscientists is identification of mechanisms causing depression. Our research looked into the structure of sleep and wakefulness and sought to determine its correlation parameters in relation to opioid receptor density in some structure of brain in rats.  According to the outcome\, it can be assumed that low motor activity in rats and excessive amount of paradoxical sleep and high intensiveness in a sleep-wake cycle are phonotypical characteristics of depressive rats. As for high density of opioid receptors in depressive rats in comparison with non-depressive ones\, the research showed that the mentioned brain structures are important to regulate emotions and\, accordingly\, developing depression or regulating sleep-wake cycle. \nReport on the topic of The Pattern of Sleep-Wake Cycle and Sleep Quality in Georgia’s Urbane Population will be made by Prof. Nato Darchia. \nAnnotation \nIn the modern society\, sleep disorders are one of the most common issues. For the purposes of assessing them\, epidemiological research is held in mainly highly developed countries. In Georgia\, epidemiological research-related data are rather scarce. We studied sleep disorders in the population of Tbilisi and Kutaisi\, with 395 individuals in total\, with the help of a questionnaire which included the questions as follows:  1. Sleep quality; 2. the degree of insomnia; 3. Risk of sleep apnea; 4. Daytime sleepiness; and 5. Health-related quality of life (SF-12). \nThe research produced the following results: 43 % of participants suffered from low quality sleep; 41 % with low effectiveness; 27.6% slept 6 hours or less per night; 26.8% suffered from sleep consolidation inability three times a week or more; 27.6% snored at night\, and 10.6% took sleeping pills; \nThe research results testify to the fact that sleeping disorders is a serious issue in the Georgian population\, and the problem needs a global evaluation. \nDate and time: 21 December\, 17: 00\nVenue: E 207 room (Cholokashvili Ave. #3/5)\, ISU \nAll are welcome to attend the event. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:ISU REPORT ON ITS SCIENTIFIC-RESEARCH ACTIVITY – INSTITUTE OF COMPSARATIVE LITERATURE
DESCRIPTION:On December 15\, at 18:00\, within the framework of the report on scientific-research activity of Iliauni\, the scientific-research projects will be presented by the Institute of Comparative Literature of Ilia State University (ISU) at room E207 of ISU (Cholokashvili Ave.\, #3/5). \nPresentation of 3 scientific-research projects will be held. \nReport on the topic Jewish Identity in Georgia and the Beginning of Globalization and Suppressed Voice of Georgian Internally Displaced Persons and Dilemmas of Social Integration will be given by Prof. Nino Pirtskalava. \nAnnotation \nJewish Identity in Georgia and the Beginning of Globalization: research by Nino Pirtskalava and Lali Guledani constitutes the only aspect of the complex research which focuses on studying the phenomenon of Tbilisi (fin de siècle) of XIX-XX as a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural city. When meticulously discussing the issue\, directing the research only to the identity of “Georgian Jews” is inadmissible. On this occasion\, it is important to study other ethnic groups of multinational Tbilisi from cultural\, religious and linguistic point of view\, which\, on its part\, requires interdisciplinary research. Studying Tbilisi\, as a multinational and multilingual phenomenon\, implies that the issue of multiculturalism will be discussed against the backdrop of the urban semiotics in the light of the functionality gained by this or that district of Tbilisi in the particular context\, and detecting the nature of the markers determining this multiculturalism. The research is being carried out in cooperation with The Volkswagen Foundation. \nCaptured in the Past: Suppressed Voice of Georgian Internally Displaced Persons and Dilemmas of Social Integration: the research by Malkhaz Toria and Nino Pirtskalava aims to study interrelations of symbolic and political factors suppressing and underestimating the requirements of the IDPs. On their part\, these factors prevent them from integrating in the Georgian public. Our research tasks focus on two prime issues: \n\nSymbolic level: nostalgic recollection of the “homeland\,” collective trauma and victim narratives as causes of “social isolation;”\nPolitical level: the activities by the government (central and local; the leadership banished from the region of Abkhazia and the so-called administration of the South Ossetia\, the Ministry of the IDPs)\, as well as the activities by the NGOs specializing in the problems faced by the IDPs. The research is being carried out in cooperation with the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs.\n\nReport on the topic of Formation of Romantic Nationalism in Georgia and Georgian Literature; Sacralisation of Cultural Figures and “Great Immortals “will be made by Prof. Bela Tsipuria. \nAnnotation \nThe research hypothesis implies that in Georgia modern national consciousness acquired its nature in the European nations in the 19th century in accordance with common logics of the formation of nationalism and tendencies. Against the backdrop of European countries creating nation states in that period and the formation of identities of several nations were underway within the great empires of Europe\, the example of Georgia can also serve as a clear testimony that the common tendency of the modern epoch existed in that era. In addition\, the role of literature in formation of the idea of nationalism\, national identity and eventually a nation state is of crucial importance in multiple countries\, as well as Georgia. The research is carried out in cooperation with the researchers at the University of Amsterdam and the Institute of Slovene Literature and Literary Studies of the Slovene Academy of Sciences and Arts (SAZU). \nDate and Time: December15\, 18:00 \nVenue: E 207 room\, ISU (Cholokashvili Ave.\, #3/5) \nAll are welcome to attend the event. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:ISU REPORT ON ITS SCIENTIFIC-RESEARCH ACTIVITY – DIMITRY UZNADZE INSTITUTE OF PSYCHOLOGY
DESCRIPTION:On December 15\, at 17:00\, within the framework of the report on scientific-research activity of Iliauni\, the scientific-research projects will be presented by Dimitri Uznadze Institute of Psychology of Ilia State University (ISU) at room E207 of ISU (Cholokashvili Ave.\, #3/5). \nPresentation of 2 scientific-research projects will be held. \nThe report on the topic “The Role of the Environment in Formation of Identity of Young Adults” will be read by Prof. Nino Javakhishvili. \nAnnotation \nThe notion of early adulthood is comparatively new in Developmental Psychology; however key universal characteristics of formation of its identity has already been studied. In addition\, researchers have already admitted that the environment plays a significant role in the formation of an identity. Our researches have also been focused on this direction\, and as it turned out different kinds of environments lead to different ways of formation of identities of Georgian youngsters. \nThe report on the topic “Psychological Adjustment of Victims of Domestic Violence” will be given by Maka Lortkipanidze. \nAnnotation \nAs studies have it\, stress deteriorates man’s aptitude for psychological adjustment. This is also true for victims of domestic violence\, who prove to suffer from anxiety and depression. The novelty of our research is that we have also studied one more aspect of psychological adjustment of victims of domestic violence which is life satisfaction. In addition\, we studied different forms of family violence\, its effect on depression\, anxiety and life satisfaction against the background of social assistance. \nDate and Time: December 15\, 17:00 \nVenue: room E207\, ISU\, Cholokashvili Ave. \nAll are welcome to attend the event. \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:ISU REPORT ON ITS SCIENTIFIC-RESEARCH ACTIVITY –INSTITUTE OF CHEMICAL BIOLOGY
DESCRIPTION:On December 14\, at 17:00\, at room E207 of Ilia State University (ISU)\, within the framework of the report on scientific-research activity of ISU\, the presentation on scientific-research projects will be held by the Institute of Chemical Biology of the University. \nThe presentation of 2 scientific-research projects will be conducted. \nThe report on the topic Molecular Mechanisms of Recognition Memory of Imprinting in Chickens will be given by Prof. Revaz Solomonia. \nAnnotation \nThe prime difficulty in perceiving molecular bases of memorization and memory is an identification of those areas of the brain that participate in the processes of preservation. This difficulty has mainly been surmounted for visionary imprinting that constitutes the process of memorization during which newly-born domestic chickens learn and later decipher the characteristics of an object in question. Before imprinting\, no visionary memorization has any effect on the brain. There exists firm overlapping data that enclosed area of frontal lobe\, intermediate and medial mesopalium (IMM) keeps the information from imprinting and other memorization process (1). Through this model\, it becomes possible to correlate quantitative-behavioral figures to quantitative figures of biochemical changes of the area. On the basis of the priority of these qualities it became possible to determine specific series of molecular changes incorporating different cellular processes. The report will focus on specific changes for memorization and memory in microRNAs\, epigenetic changes of chondriosome DNM\, etc. \nA microRNA (abbreviated miRNA) is a small non-coding RNA molecule (containing about 22 nucleotides) found in plants\, animals and some viruses that functions in RNA silencing and post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression. We compared changes in a microRNA spectrum\, after 24 hours from the act of memorizing\, in the IMM of the left hemisphere of chickens with a good and bad memorizing ability.  These comparison revealed 12 microRNAs the expression of which is considerably different between the groups. For further validation\, from microRNAs\, was chosen mir-130b\, which is characterized by average frequency expression. We demonstrated specific declension for mir-130b memory in the left IMM. \nThe report on the topic Engagement of Metabotropic Glutamate Receptor 5 in Macrophage Plasticity will be given by Lali Shanshiashvili. \nAnnotation \nMacrophages play a significant role in protecting hosts and preserving homeostasis. Functional macrophages are heterogenic cells and\, according to their dependence on microenvironment\, are polarized in two groups:  classically activated M1 and alternatively activated M2 phenotypes. Glutamate acid and glutamate receptors may be involved in the plasticity of macrophages. We carried out transfection RAW-264.7 of metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 in macrophagic cells. Comparative analysis of transfected and non-transfected cells demonstrated that transfected macrophages adsorb more glutamate that controlling cells. Intercellular concentration of glutamate correlated with the expression of transporter 2 of cationic amino acids. In addition\, in transfected macrophages the expression of receptor-g increased. \nWe assume that the increase of concentration of intercellular glutamate and glutamate metabotropic receptor 5 can cause metabolic rearrangement of macrophages and formation of immunosuppressive M2 phenotype. \nDate and Time: December 14\, 17:00 \nVenue: E 207 room\, Cholokashvili Ave.\, ISU \nAll are welcomed to attend the event \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:ISU REPORT ON ITS SCIENTIFIC-RESEARCH ACTIVITY –INSTITUTE OF BIOPHYSICS
DESCRIPTION:On December 13\, at 17:00\, at Ilia State University (ISU) E 207 room\, (Cholokashvili Ave.\, #3/5)\, within the framework of the report on scientific-research activity of ISU\, the presentation on scientific-research projects will be held by the Biophysics Institute of the University. \nThe presentation of two scientific-research projects will be held. \nThe report on the topic Quadruplex Priming Amplification (QPA) for Molecular Diagnostics will be given by Levan Lomidze. \nAnnotation \nQuadruplex priming amplification (QPA) constitutes a method which allows isothermal amplification of DNA and possesses intrinsic real-time detection mechanism. The key mechanism of QPA is DNA pattern GGGTGGGTGGGTGGG (G3T)\, which forms strong thermal stability structure Quadruplex. G3T\, which in its 3’-praim end lacks guanine\, is used as a primer in the reaction. Missing guanine residues is critical for quadruplex formation\, and since it is missing quadruplex cannot be formed. However\, when polymers add guanine to primer\, GST folds into a quadruplex in the wake of what primer\, in an isothermal way\, is separated from the target DNM\, and the primer end is free to attach the next primer. Also primers incorporate fluorescent nucleotide\, e.g. 3-methylisoxanthopterin\, which is characterized by amplifying fluorescent signals after the formation of quadruplex\, and this proves to be an effective means for determining signals without fluorescent signaling molecules. We created QPA reaction\, which allows an effective\, fast and isothermal amplification of DNM; the aforementioned method can widely be applied to discover biomedical\, molecular biology\, genetics and forensic science diseases and pathogenic microorganisms\, as well as in scientific research. \nThe report on the topic Laser-induced Fluorescent Resonance Energy Transfer to Study Defects in DNM Dual Spiral will be delivered by Irina Khutsishvili. \nAnnotation \nFluorescent resonance method for transferring nanoscale energy allows to determine concentration of DNM dual spiral areas that is useful for intercalation. This method enables us to hold DNM comparative analysis in different damaged DNM structures. Through Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer Method (FRET) has been studied DNM complexes with recovered silver and copper ions and silver particles; the effect of temperature on DNM dual spiral has also been explored. \nDate and Time: 13 December\, 17:00 \nVenue: E 207 room (Cholokashvili Ave.\, #3/5)\, ISU \nAll are welcomed to attend the event. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
