SUMMARY:Webinar on Public Opinion Research in a Time of War
DESCRIPTION:On June 15\, Wednesday\, at 14:00\, Inna Volosevych\, Deputy Director of InfoSapiens\, and Michael Druckman\, IRI Program Director of Ukraine\, will speak at the Webinar on Public Opinion Research in a Time of War. \nThe Russian invasion of Ukraine constitutes a violation of international law and undermines the democratic principles of international politics. In a time of war\, the political and social processes fundamentally change. Understanding the attitudes and opinions of the population and discussing the challenges the public opinion researchers experience under siege is equally important. In March and April\, Ukrainian pollsters – InfoSapiens and Rating Group conducted several polls to understand the popular opinions on politically and socially relevant issues. For instance\, InfoSapiens surveyed to what extent are Ukrainians resilient against Russian aggression and disapprove the ban on Ukraine’s accession to NATO and EU. The Rating Group conducted the eight national polls to study popular attitudes on war-related topics\, including the psychological markers of the war\, adaptation of Ukrainians to the war conditions\, assessment of the situation in Ukraine\, international support of Ukraine and the guilt of the peoples of Russia and Belarus. Reputable international organizations such as IRI Ukraine conducted public opinion polls showing overwhelming support for the Ukrainian President\, the confidence of the Ukrainian people in winning the war\, as well as willingness and readiness to join the European Union. \nInna Volosevych\, Deputy Director of InfoSapiens and Michael Druckman\, IRI Program Director of Ukraine\, will discuss topics related to the organization and conduction of these polls in sociological and methodological terms. They will also bring insights into the interpretation of poll results to contextualize the surveyed attitudes. \nInna Volosevych will focus on “What Do Surveys Tell us about the Public Opinions in the Period of War: The Comparative Analysis of Ukraine and Russia” \nMichael Druckman will focus on “Understanding Ukrainian Citizens’ Sentiments on Domestic Politics\, International Support and Geopolitical Alignments” \nDate: June 15 Wednesday \nTime: 2 pm. Tbilisi Time \nModerator: Prof. Dr. Zarina Burkadze\, Secretary General of the Georgian Association for Public Opinion Research \n20 minutes discussion for each speaker that is followed by a 10 minutes Q & A session \nLanguage: English \nShort biographies of speakers: \n\nInna Volosevych\nMichael Druckman \n\n2022 \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Eric Lee's Public Lecture: “Why the Georgian Experiment Matters”
DESCRIPTION:American writer and journalist\, Eric Lee\, will deliver a public lecture on “Why the Georgian Experiment Matters” at Ilia State University on May 25th\, with regards to Georgia’s Independence Day. \nThe writer is staying in Georgia within the framework of the Writer-in-Residence joint program of the Writers’ House and the U.S. Embassy in Georgia\, and with the support of Ilia State University. \nEric Lee will be awarded the title of Honorary Doctor of Ilia State University after the lecture. \nAbout the lecture \nUntil 1917\, it was widely expected that the victory of a socialist party anywhere in the world would lead to an expansion of human freedom. That is what all socialists had been promising since Karl Marx famously wrote that “the first step in the revolution … [is] to win the battle of democracy.” But instead of democracy\, the victory of the Russian Communists resulted in the world’s first modern totalitarian state. What had gone wrong? Did socialism mean a new form of tyranny? And was there an alternative to the dictatorship established by Lenin\, Trotsky\, and Stalin? \nThe first Georgian republic\, which lasted barely three years\, was embraced by social democratic leaders including Karl Kautsky as the alternative to Bolshevism. The delegation of European social democratic leaders who visited Georgia in late 1920 — and the parties they led — began to rethink their own vision of a new society in light of what they saw emerging in Russia and Georgia at that time. Even more so in the aftermath of the crushing of the 1924 uprising in Georgia\, the two camps which had co-existed on the European Left came apart\, with Communists on the one side and Socialists on the other. \nThough the historic memory of the Georgian Republic had largely disappeared in Europe\, their vision of “democratic socialism\,” an alternative to Communism\, became increasingly important\, especially during the Cold War. That vision of liberating and democratic socialism remains relevant today as well. \nAbout the Speaker \nEric Lee (b. 1955) is an American writer\, journalist\, and trade unionist. He is the founding editor of the website LabourStart\, which covers trade union media and campaigns around the world. \nEric Lee devoted thirty years to the study of various aspects of Georgian history and wrote two books: \n\nThe Experiment: Georgia’s Forgotten Revolution 1918-1921 (Zed\, 2017) The book is also published in Georgian (Publishing House “Poetry”\, 2018) and in Russian.\nNight of the Bayonets: The Texel Uprising and Hitler’s revenge (GreenHill Books\, 2020) The book entitled “Georgian Uprising on Texel: The Last Battle in Europe” is also published in Georgian (Publishing House “Poetry”\, 2020)\, Dutch and Czech.\n\nIn addition to these books\, Eric Lee is the author of four other books: \n\nBritain’s Plot to Kill Hitler: The True Story of Operation Foxley and SOE (GreenHill Books\, 2022)\nOperation Basalt: The British Raid on Sark and Hitler’s Commando Order (The History Press\, 2016)\nThe Labour Movement and the Internet: The New Internationalism (Pluto Press\, 1996)\nSaigon to Jerusalem: Conversations with Israel’s Vietnam Veterans (McFarland\, 1992)\n\nFormat \nThe public lecture and the ceremony will be held in a hybrid format. Participants can choose the preferred format of attendance through the pre-registration. \nFollow the link to register: https://bit.ly/3EVcsua \nWorking language \nEnglish (simultaneous interpreters will be provided) \nTime: May 25th\, 19:00 \n2022 \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Erica Benner’s Public Lecture “Do Democracies Need Nationalism?”
DESCRIPTION:Ilia State University will host a lecture “Do Democracies Need Nationalism?” by the writer and researcher\, Erica Benner\, on May 25\, at 15:00. \nThe lecture will be moderated by Hans Gutbrod\, Associate Professor of Ilia State University. \nThose who wish to attend must register no later than May 23rd. \nTo register follow the link: https://bit.ly/38JePnX \nAbout the Lecture: \nThe rise of extreme nationalism is one of the greatest challenges facing democracies today. Are they right? What are the risks of relying on nationalism to heal our damaged democracies? \nBiography of Erica Benner \nErica Benner is a writer and scholar who works on moral and political thought. Erica has taught at Oxford\, the London School of Economics and the Central European University and recently has published a number of well-acclaimed books on Machiavelli (see http://www.ericabenner.com/). She has worked on nationalism since the early 1990s\, and holds a DPhil from the University of Oxford. \nWorking language: English \nTime: 25 May\, 15:00 \nLive – Event Link: https://bit.ly/3ahS2jI \n2022 \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Korean Traditional Games
DESCRIPTION:Ilia State University will organize Korean Week with the support of partner Korean universities\, associations and diplomatic missions\, which will take place on May 14-20\, 2022\, to mark the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Korea and Georgia. \nWe are inviting you to participate in the Korean Traditional Games during the Korean Week on May 18\, at 15:30. \nYou will be able to familiarize with the instructions and take part in such games as: Hanbok\, Seoye (calligraphy)\, Tuho\, Jegichagi\, Ddakji. \nThe event will be held in the physical space and you can attend it by pre-registration (the event will be attended by the first 50 registered participants). \nTo register\, follow the link: https://bit.ly/3MmLVIS \nHanbok \nHanbok is the traditional Korean attire that can be traced back to the Three Kingdoms of Korea period (1st century BC – 7th century AD). However\, present day Hanbok is patterned after the hanbok worn in the Joseon dynasty and is often worn on traditional holidays or official events. \nSeoye \nKorean calligraphy\, also known as Seoye\, is the Korean tradition of artistic writing. This art form derived from Chinese calligraphy was later introduced to Korea and Japan and reflects the tradition of writing on paper in Hanja (Chinese characters) and Hangul\, the native Korean alphabet. \nDdakji \nDdakji\, a traditional Korean toy\, is made from folded pieces of paper. It can be played easily; the goal is to flip the opponent’s Ddakji placed on the floor by throwing yours. \nTuho \nTuho was mostly played by royal families or Yanban (nobles of the Joseon period) families in the backyard of the house. The goal is to throw arrows into the pot from a distance. Players are divided into two teams. The team that throws the most arrows in the pot wins. \nTime: May 18\, 15:30 – 16:30 \nLocation: The first 50 registered participants will receive a location address via text message. \n2022 \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
