SUMMARY:AMERICA: 25 Years after Independence
DESCRIPTION:With democracy still young and untested\, agression from a foreign power forced America to unite as a nation and a people. \n A lecture by American historian Ian Toll \nWith an introduction by Ambassador Ian C. Kelly \nDATE: Wednesday\, November 9\, 2016 \nTIME: 19:00 \nLOCATION: Ilia State University\, 32 Ilia Chavchavadze Avenue\, auditorium B 202 \nMr. Toll’s lecture will focus on the state of the American nation shortly after independence\, and the internal and external pressures that forced America’s leaders to fight to protect their soverignty. In 1801\, our freedom would be tested by the might of the British Empire\, our former rulers. But economic uncertainty\, feuding political parties and pistol duels threatned to tear the country apart. Unless the people could unite and find a common cause\, American democracy would have no future.    \nIan Toll is an American author and political/military historian known for his examination of U.S. federal government decision making during international maritime conflicts. He is best known for his examinations of the escalation and conflicts between the United States and Great Britain in the War of 1812 and the WW II Pacific Theater against the Japanese. His books have won broad critical acclaim and were selected for the Samuel Eliot Morison Award\, the William E. Colby Award\, and New York Times “Editor’s Choice” list. \nBorn in Japan while his father was on a Fulbright scholarship abroad\, Toll received a Bachelor’s degree in American History at Georgetown University and a Master’s in Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Prior to writing historical non-fiction\, Toll was a Wall Street analyst\, a Federal Reserve financial analyst\, and a political aide and speechwriter. \nThe lecture is free and open to the public \nEvent Link: facebook.com/events/683645825128738/ \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Public Lecture -„Macroeconomic and Microeconomic Implications of the Distributed Profit Taxation System\, the Estonian Experience“
DESCRIPTION:On October 4\, 14:00\, in room G 106 of Ilia State University (ISU) a public lecture will be delivered by lecturer of Tartu University\, Mark Kantšukov on the topic Macroeconomic and Microeconomic Implications of the Distributed Profit Taxation System\, the Estonian Experience. The lecture will be held within the event “Estonian Days in Georgia”. \nWorking language: English \nDescription: \nIn the mid of 2016 the parliament of Georgia proposed changes to the country’s tax laws to introduce a new system of corporate income taxation according to which businesses will have to pay income tax only on distributed profits. Estonia introduced a similar model in 2000 and so far it has been the only country in the world having this system of corporate taxation. Georgia\, which used Estonian tax model as an example\, will be the second country in the world to adopt such a model. \nWhat can Georgia learn from the Estonian almost two decades long experience? In the lecture macroeconomic and microeconomic implications\, both theoretical and practical aspects of the distributed profit taxation system for Estonia are discussed. The main focus of the presentation lies on the results of previous scientific and applied studies. \n\nTime: 4 November\, 14:00 \nVenue: room G106\, G. Tsereteli Str. 1 \nAll are welcome to attend the event. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:ISU SCIENCE CAFÉ INVITING TO ATTEND GODERDZI DIDEBULIDZE’S PUBLIC LECTURE CLIMATE AND SPACE
DESCRIPTION:On October 12\, Wednesday\, at 18:00\, Iliauni Science Café is pleased to invite you to attend the meeting with ISU associate professor of the faculty of natural sciences and engineering\, Goderdzi Didebulidze\, in room E 207 of ISU. \nTopic: Climate and Space \nThe development of climate changes demonstrates its connection to the factors related to men\, as well as space. Long-term changes of atmospheric parameters may be related to the sun’s current solar activity cycle\, the current of galactic cosmic rays and atmospheric changes caused by human activities. It has been demonstrated that the global warming trend in the lower atmosphere of the earth is followed by global decrease in temperature (“global cooling”) in the upper atmospheric layers. The occurrence of this phenomenon has its own regional features\, which are also characteristic of the region of Caucasus. The trends of long-term changes of atmospheric and ionosphere parameters detected from the Abastumani observatory\, as well as their possible connections to cosmic and human factors will be demonstrated. \nTime: October 12\, 18:00 \nLocation: room E207\, Cholokashvili AVE #3/5\, ISU \nAll are welcome to attend the meeting. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:4th International Conference “Tao-Klarjeti”
DESCRIPTION:Ilia State University\n4th International Conference “Tao-Klarjeti”\n21-24 September\, 2016\n \nTao-Klarjeti\, as a collective name\, stands for the north-eastern historical provinces of Turkey (Tao\, Klarjeti\, Shavsheti\, Kola\, Artaani\, Chrdili\, etc.). Due to its strategic location as a meeting point of various ethnic groups and an intersection of cultures\, the Tao-Klarjeti region has consistently and throughout the centuries attracted interest of various larger powers and regional actors.  \nTao-Klarjeti is rich in historic political\, administrative\, episcopal and monastic centers\, replete with churches\, late antique and medieval fortifications\, monumental paintings and reliefs\, manuscript heritage and gold artifacts. \nInternational and local political\, social\, economic\, demographic and ethno-confessional processes have left a long-lasting impact on the daily life of the peoples of Tao-Klarjeti and have been engrained in religious practices\, place names\, languages and dialects. \nEarly state formations on the territory of Tao-Klarjeti\, as well as new political and religious centers that appeared throughout the middle ages\, have played a crucial role in the formation of Georgian culture and eventually\, statehood. \nUnfortunately\, for a long time travel to the region was restricted and possibilities for scholarly research were scarce. Nowadays Tao-Klarjeti is visited by an increasing number of scholars\, along with a constantly growing flow of tourists. \nThe gradual exposure of the region to a wider public has generated a strong scholarly and public interest in the Tao-Klarjeti region. The first Interdisciplinary International conference dedicated to the region was held in 2010 and has since then become a regular event.  \nWorking Sections\nHistory / Archival study / Source study\nArt history\nPhilology / Linguistics\nEthnology/Archaeology\nRestoration/Conservation\nTourism and management of cultural heritage/Geography \nWorking Languages\n• Georgian\n• English\n• Turkish\n \nAbstract\nDeadline: 30 May\nMaximum number of symbols: 2.000-4.000\nSelected speakers will be notified before or by 30 June\n \nPaper\nDeadline: 30 July\nMaximum number of symbols: 13.000\n \nAdditional notes\n• The paper must not be previously published\, nor presented at any other conference \n• The abstract must clearly indicate the results of the study\n \nThe conference will be held on 21-24 September\, 2016\, at Ilia State University. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:CONFERENCE ON „25 YEARS OF GEORGIA’S INDEPENDENCE: ACHIEVEMENTS AND UNFINISHED PROJECTS“AND PRESENTATION OF COLLECTION OF ARTICLES
DESCRIPTION:On July 12\, at 11:00\, a conference on the topic “25 Years of Georgia’s Independence: Achievements and Unfinished Projects” will be held at G106 room of Ilia State University. Within the framework of the conference\, the collection of articles in one book with the same title will be presented. The book published through joint efforts of Ilia State University and Konrad Adenauer Foundation comprises the articles of the professors of Ilia State University\, Tbilisi State University\, University of Oxford\, Free University of Berlin and Uppsala University. The authors will introduce the audience to key discoveries of their works while delivering a speech. \nApproximately a quarter-century ago\, Georgia announced its independence\, and embarked upon the difficult task of building a state. The beginning was unfavorable\, however – against the backdrop of civil wars\, destruction of political and economic systems\, the vast majority of Georgians did not believe Georgia would prove to be a viable country. However\, today\, after 25 years from gaining its independence\, Georgia has still to negotiate numerous challenges. Although fortunately\, overall\, it can be said that the country’s strenuous efforts have yielded positive consequences\, since today Georgia can be defined as a self-made state with well-functioning institutions\, active civil society\, growing economy and strong ties with different international powerhouses\, including the EU and NATO. \nThe aforementioned edition on 25 Years of Georgia’s Independence refers to those challenges Georgia had to cope with in the very beginning\, as well as its path to today’s Georgia. \nIt is interesting to know how progress was made and what is still left to be done. The authors of 6 chapters of the book will discuss and elaborate on how Georgia succeeded in building a state and democratizing it\, as well as developing a civil society\, advancing economy\, and settling into the new international system. \nDespite the book being based on academic research\, it is pleasant to read for any interested person. \nSee the programme of the conference in the file attached below. \nVenue:  Ilia State University\, Kakutsa Cholokashvili Ave 3/5\, E207 \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Memory and Identity in Post-Soviet Space: Georgia and the Caucasus in a Broader Eastern European Context
DESCRIPTION:The Caucasus can be described as the meeting point\, crossroads or borderland of different cultures and civilizations. The very fact that various nations\, ethnic groups\, religions and cultures coexist in this region presuppose the essence of different and even sharply divided and contested mnemonic communities\, since collective memory is the crucial marker of ethnic or cultural identities. While many ongoing political problems are the results of memory politics\, the investigation of memory issues in Georgia and in the Caucasus is still rare and is in initial stage. \nThe conference\, which will be held at Ilia State University on June 1-3\, 2016\, aims to reflect on key aspects of memory\, identity and politics in Georgia\, Caucasus and post-socialist space and intends to coordinate regional and international cooperation of scholars working on this complex and broad academic field. The conference participants consist of scholars from USA\, Poland\, Azerbaijan\, Armenia\, and Georgia. \nThe conference could apply to a wide range of problems\, which will promote to reveal at the same time unique and universal features of memory related phenomena and processes in modern Georgia\, the Caucasus\, Central and East Europe. In particular\, topics to elaborate include but are not limited to: \n\nPolitics of memory in historical perspectives: historical forms of memory policy in Georgia and the Caucasus.\nSoviet and post-Soviet memory politics in the framework of totalitarianism and imperial legacies.\nSites and realms of memory in Georgia and the Caucasus.\nCollective memory and collective amnesia: collective amnesia as the act of forgetting and a way toward reaching social cohesion?\nMemory in peace building and reconciliation process.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
