SUMMARY:Public Lecture from Professor Hans Ulrich "Sepp" Gumbrecht
DESCRIPTION:On 22 October 2018\, at 18:00\, ISU Ligamus Book House will host Professor Hans Ulrich “Sepp” Gumbrecht’s public lecture called “Does Silicon Valley Have and Need An Epistemology? ”\nIf Hegel was to re-appear in the 21st century to ask his obsessive question where does spirit dwell?\, his attention would be captured by avant-garde engineers developing artificial intelligence in Silicon Valley. Being unable to fit within the established frames of thought\, which most of us associate with philosophy\, Silicon Valley inhabitants are obviously disregardful of traditionally-minded intellectuals. \nHowever\, do they need epistemological frames? What stands beyond their amazing and frightful fecundity? \nAbout the speaker:\nHans Ulrich “Sepp” Gumbrecht \, Honorary Doctor of the Ilia State University\, is among the most influential literary and cultural theorists. Professor at Stanford University\, he specializes in literature and philosophical traditions of France\, Spain\, Germany and Portugal. Gumbrecht is the author of The Powers of Philology (2003)\, In 1926: Living on the Edge of Time (1998)\, In Praise of Athletic Beauty (2006)\, Vom Leben Und Sterben Der Grossen Romanisten: Karl Vossler\, Ernst Robert Curtius\, Leo Spitzer\, Erich Auerbach\, Werner Krauss\, Hanser (2002)\, Production of Presence: What Meaning Cannot Convey (2004) and many others that have been translated into different languages of the world. \n\nLanguage: English \nTime: 22 October 2018\, 18:00 \nVenue: Ligamus Book House\, Ilia State University (32 Ilia Chavchavadze Ave.) \nAttendance is free. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Meeting with employees of Czech University of Life Science in Prague
DESCRIPTION:On July 11th \, 19:00\, in room E207\, Ilia State University will host employees of Czech University of Life Science in Prague. \nSpeaker : Martin Kulma\, Researcher from Czech University of Life Science in Prague. \nThe topic of the lecture: How can insects feed the world? \nDescription : The currently increasing world population\, with increasing per capita consumption and \ndietary habit changes\, poses higher demands on the nutritional resources production for both animals \nas well as for humans. In the limited and exploited resources\, livestock farming is becoming \nunsustainable. Production of sufficient high-quality protein with minimalisation of the environmental \nfootprint has thus become one of major challenges for humans. Insects are considered to be one of \npotential alternatives. The presentation will provide both basic and novel information about their \nnutritional value as well as about the experimental usage as feed for farm animals. \nSpeaker : Veronika Tůmová\, aquaponics specialist from Czech University of Life Science in Prague \nThe topic of the lecture: Sustainable food production using aquaponics – current state and future \nperspectives. \nDescription: Nowadays\, building aquaponic systems has become trandy because of its advantage \ncombining hydrophonic and aquaculture systems together. The presentation will provide you \ninformation about the benefits of aquaponic systems. Following questions will be addressed by the \nspecialist: Can be aquaponics successful way of producing food? What are the main issues? What are \nfuture perspectives of aquaponics? \nDate: 11.07.2018 \nTime: 19:00 \nLocation: E207 room\, (3/5\, Kakutsa Cholokashvili Ave\, Tbilisi\, Georgia)\, Ilia State University. \nAll are welcome to attend the event. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:SuAVE: a new online system for visual analysis of surveys and image collections
DESCRIPTION:On 21 February\, 15:00\, Director of Spatial Information Systems Laboratory\, Ilya Zaslavsky will give a speech on the topic SuAVE: a new online system for visual analysis of surveys and image collections\, at Ilia State University room E207. \nSuAVE: a new online system for visual analysis of surveys and image collections Survey Analysis via Visual Exploration (SuAVE\, http://suave.sdsc.edu) is a free online system developed with support from the U.S. National Science Foundation. It has been already used in several areas\, including social and electoral surveys\, visual arts and humanities\, biology and ecology\, and the\ngeosciences. The SuAVE tool integrates visual\, statistical and cartographic analyses and presents an intuitive framework for exploration of surveys and image collections\, enabling custom searches\, efficient analysis of subsets of data\, and Google Maps-like navigation over a gallery of images or survey respondents. Users can publish their own surveys online\, annotate patterns they discover\, and share those annotations. Tools like SuAVE can help communicate scientific knowledge and develop insights\nthrough guided exploration of relationships between different variables\, while engaging students and a broad user audience in sharing their findings. We will present several SuAVE applications\, including examples from archaeology and humanities\, and international development\, and discuss other relevant projects developed with the NSF EarthCube initiative. \nDr. Ilya Zaslavsky is director of Spatial Information Systems Lab at the San Diego Supercomputer Center\, University of California San Diego. His research focuses on distributed information management systems and spatial and temporal data integration. Zaslavsky received his Ph.D. from the University of Washington (1995)\, and earlier a Ph.D. equivalent from the Russian Academy of Sciences (1990). He has been leading design and technical development in several large cyberinfrastructure\nprojects supported by NSF\, including the national-scale EarthCube CINERGI/Data Discovery Hub\, and Hydrologic Information System. He is a co-chair of the OGC/WMO Hydrology Domain Working Group which develops international standards for water data. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Public Lecture by Doctor Irina Marchesini called Are you Immortal? Umberto Eco and others on reading
DESCRIPTION:On 22 January\, at 18:00\, at Ilia State University Book House Ligamus\, Dr. Irina Marchesini\, lecturer at the University of Bologna\, will deliver a public lecture called “Are you Immortal? Umberto Eco and others on reading.” \nShort abstract: According to Umberto Eco\, Italian novelist and literary critic\, “[a]t the age of 70\, those who don’t read will have led only one life: their own! Those who read will have lived 5000 lives: they were there when Cain killed Abel\, when Renzo married Lucia and when Leopardi admired the infinite… because literature is backwards immortality”. Starting from this premise\, the plenary lecture will address the process of reading from a comparative perspective. Case studies will include Italian and Russian-America authors\, as Umberto Eco\, Italo Calvino\, Alessandro Manzoni\, Vladimir Nabokov. Dr Irina Marchesini is at the Institute of Comparative Literature of Ilia State University within the framework of Erasmus + Teaching Mobility for Academic Staff. \nLanguage: English \nDate and time: 22 January\, 18:00 \nVenue: Book House Ligamus (Chavchavadze Ave. #32)\, Ilia State University \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Mining conflicts in Kyrgyzstan: properties of coupled ecological-industrial transactions and their role in shaping institutions as shared beliefs
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture \nBeril Ocaklı \nMining conflicts in Kyrgyzstan: properties of coupled ecological-industrial transactions and their role in shaping institutions as shared beliefs \n17.01.2018\, Tbilisi\, 19:00 LIGAMUS (tbc) \nBeril Ocaklıa\,b  will present her recent paper derived from her doctoral research with the working title “Progressing beyond mining as evil: exploring conflict and cooperation in the face of competing claims on land-water systems and territorial transformations in Kyrgyzstan”. \na Doctoral Researcher                               \nTransformations and Uncertainties of Land-Water Systems \nIRI THESys | Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin \nb Project Director \n‘Mineral Resources of Development in Central Asia’ \nFederation of German Industry\, Committee on Eastern European Economic Relations \nMining conflicts in Kyrgyzstan: properties of coupled ecological-industrial transactions and their role in shaping institutions as shared beliefs \nAbstract \nWith the increase of mining conflicts worldwide\, the number of scholars studying trade-offs in mining have also risen. However\, integrative\, social-ecological systems approaches are scarce. This study aims at contributing both theoretically and empirically to the emerging interdisciplinary literature by analysing mining conflicts in Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan is emblematic of a resource-cursed economy: despite gold mining accounting for nearly 50% of its exports\, the country has failed to transform the mineral wealth into growth and sustainable development. The sector is characterised by upheavals\, and conflicts that challenge the further development of the sector as well as disputing the very compatibility of mining and the sustainability of human-environment systems. In this paper\, we study mining conflict dynamics from the perspective of institutional economics and empirically analyse the interdependence between properties of transactions and institutions. We introduce coupled ecological-industrial transactions as the unit of analysis for studying mining transactions\, that is\, transactions composed of both industrial and ecological processes. We offer a theoretical framework where properties of coupled ecological-industrial transactions and institutions as shared beliefs interact and provide incentives for conflict or cooperation. We test this theoretical proposition on a case study of shared beliefs of national actors in Bishkek\, Kyrgyzstan. Our results suggest that the properties of coupled ecological-industrial transactions and actor beliefs are mutually interdependent\, whereby path-dependencies can shape the shared beliefs. Path-dependency is especially influential in contexts like Kyrgyzstan\, where drastic governance change has taken place. These shared beliefs – institutions – can incentivise national actors to acknowledge the existence of and the drivers for preventing/mitigating conflicts. Likewise\, they can motivate the perpetuation of conflict as it might seem costlier to promote cooperation than conflict if cooperation entails long-term institutional change. For conflict prevention\, the complexity of multi-scalar ecological-industrial transactions requires institutions that are responsive to the properties of these transactions. Such institutions\, when well-defined and enforced\, are indispensable for governing the properties of mining transactions\, with the potential to decrease conflict. \nKeywords: institutional analysis\, social-ecological systems\, nature-related transactions\, cooperation\, path-dependency\, Bishkek. \nShort bio \nBeril Ocaklı is a transdisciplinary professional and a doctoral researcher. She started her doctoral research in June 2015 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin\, Integrative Research Institute on Transformations of Human-Environment Systems (IRI THESys). Alongside her doctoral research\, she continues working for the Federation of German Industry\, where she is implementing a regional project commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in the Central Asian mining sector. \nBeril looks back on more than 10 years of professional experience in international development cooperation\, where she managed numerous development projects in the field of private sector development in Germany\, East Europe and Central Asia. Beril obtained her master’s degree in Development Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2007. Prior to that she completed her undergraduate studies at the Corvinus University of Budapest\, Hungary. \nHer scientific work focuses on understanding the underlying factors behind conflicting or cooperative behaviours local communities have towards mining projects in Kyrgyzstan for which studying the human-environment-system transformations caused by resource extraction is a milestone. \n  \n  \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
