SUMMARY:WORKSHOP: CIVIL WAR AS A POLITICAL PARADIGM: GIORGIO AGAMBEN AND THE “POLITICS OF THE END-TIMES”
DESCRIPTION:Savle Tsereteli Institute of Philosophy hosts workshop: Civil War as a \npolitical paradigm: Giorgio Agamben and the “Politics of the End-times”. \nFor registration\, please email us at stefanomelispiroddi@gmail.com. \nRegistration deadline: 25th August. \nStudying civil war \nWhy civil war? And why now? \nIn today’s globalized and fragmented world\, civil war is a constant\, yet its nature is rarely investigated. While scholars prefer to see civil war as one of the many facets of the question of war itself\, Giorgio Agamben has set to examine the question of civil war as separate altogether and\, in contrast to the established discourse\, as even more ancient. From his defiant assertion that civil war lays at the foundation of Western political thought\, we will consider the practices and the implications that civil war poses on human civilization. We will analyse if \nAgamben’s inquiry can be the first step in the inauguration of a newer and proper political thought. The goal is equipping future politics to face upcoming \nchallenges such as AI\, environmental collapse\, and dehumanisation. \n  \nWhat should participants expect from the seminar? \nParticipants will analyze constructs and tenets at the basis of modern political thinking. They will learn to assess and scrutinize between similar yet different concepts. Participants will also be tasked with reading English language papers and documents\, as well as providing response papers. \nDr. Stefano Piroddi has graduated with merit from the University of Bath. He has taken part in project and seminars at the Humboldt Universität zu Berlin\, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, and the University of Trento. He holds a M.A. in Political Science and International Relations and a Bachelor’s in Sociology. \nMain readings: ‘Stasis’ by Giorgio Agamben\, ‘Society Must Be Defended’ by Michel Foucault’\, ’Liquid Modernity’ by Zygmunt Bauman. \nAdditional readings: ‘Homo Sacer’ by Giorgio Agamben\, ’State of Exception’ by Giorgio Agamben\, ’Before the Law’ by Franz Kafka\, plus more. \nAll resources will be provided in full. \nFull attendance is strongly recommended. \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Public lecture by an anthropologist Martin Demant Frederiksen “Nothingness\, Anthropology and the Shadowy World of Meaning”
DESCRIPTION:On 12 March\, 2019\, Tuestday\, at 19:00\, an anthropologist Martin Demant Frederiksen will deliver a lecture “Nothingness\, Anthropology and the Shadowy World of Meaning” within the frames of Anthropological Research Seminars\, at ISU Room A 103. The lecture is based on Frederiksen’s new book “An Anthropology of Nothing in Particular” (Zero Books\, 2018). \nOverview \nDespite a number of theoretical differences\, the hermeneutical principles of meaning and coherence used to form the basis for anthropological writings. However\, issues such as nothingness and empirical meaninglessness or incoherence question the above-mentioned forms of writing and social world analysis. The paper starts with Jean-Paul Sartre’s and Susan Sontag’s statements that nothing exists and “to interpret is to impoverish”\, which will allow the speaker to examine the meaning of these statements in terms of anthropological analysis. \nMartin Demant Frederiksen is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Social Anthropology\, the University of Oslo. He is the author of the books “Young Men\, Time\, and Boredom in the Republic of Georgia (2013)\, “Georgian Portraits: Essays on the Afterlives of a Revolution” (2017) and “An Anthropology of Nothing in Particular” (2018). \nLanguage: English \nTime: 12 March\, 19:00 \nLocation: Room A103\, Ilia State University (32 I. Chavchavadze ave.) \nAttendance is free. \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:International Scientific Student Conference
DESCRIPTION:Students Facing the Challenges of the Twenty- First Century\n\nIlia State University\, Georgia \n18-20 July\, 2019 \nProposal submission deadline: 10 April\, 2019\n\nThe twenty-first century has brought new challenges to the university education. In the last few years\, most universities have witnessed the significant inner transformations in their education system. However\, there still remains a serious challenge to the universities to meet the demands of the social community the product of which they represent. \nAt the turn of the 21st century\, the major challenges face the university education system: economic globalization\, knowledge-based economic growth\, the information and communications revolution\, global migration process\, the national and transnational policy\, – all these significant trends require a sufficient acquisition of competences and skills to ensure career success that students aim to achieve in 21st century. \nThe challenges of the twenty-first century lead to a wide range of competences of various fields\, namely\, specialized capabilities\, social and intercultural competences\, language competences- English languish acquisition along with other languages\, and finally\, the immediate knowledge of economic and political forces that affect the modern societies. \nAccordingly\, in the last two decades\, the modern societies have witnessed the necessity of adopting a new teaching / learning model. There are a lot of relevant texts available that focus on the three leading issues- certain motivations for adopting a new learning and teaching model\, the acquisition of specific competences and skills required to answer the challenges of the twenty- first century and the pedagogy of stimulation of these skills (Cynthia Luna Scott\, 2015). \nThe special document approved by the UNESCO in 2015 introduces a list of competences and skills\, intended to be developed in the educational process and thus adopting the appropriate pedagogy\, that will promote students’ postgraduate advancement that come as a relevant response to the recent challenges of social and labor market.\nThe recent challenges include introducing new digital technologies in the learning process and setting a relevant academic condition for students and professors so that they can reach the target of applying new technologies together with the traditional models of teaching / learning. In addition\, today\, when there is a large access to any kind of unverified or verified information for students available in the shortest period of time\, it still remains within the university commitments to promote critical thinking in students\, to teach them how to use new technologies\, how to evaluate and choose the relevant information for their professional advancement and then\, how to use the knowledge in practice. \nCorrespondingly\, the aim of the conference is identifying and discussing the recent reforms in the university education system in Central and Eastern Europe including the specific questions: how the students engage in reform initiatives and its implementation; how they evaluate the corresponding relationship between the universities and employment market; how the professional skills can be adopted within the learning process; how the students engage in starting and developing scientific and research projects; how they are equipped with the opportunities to participate in research projects with their professors that finally achieves the goal of acquiring a wide range of skills and competences\, such as metacognitive and intercultural competences\, team work\, team partnership and leadership\, initiatives and enterprise management knowledge\, organization\, curiosity and imagination\, efficient oral and writing communication skills\, information acquisition \, critical thinking and decision-making skill\, flexibility and adaptability\, risk-taking and creativity (Wagner 2010). \nBased on the above\, the participant students can submit their proposal on the following colloquium topics: \n\nTeaching/Learning and digital technologies\nResearch component in the learning process\nUniversity and employment market: student-university-enterprise\nThe Relationship between school and university\nEducation reform- achievements and shortcomings\n Examination system: national entrance exams or school-leaving exams?\nAccredited programs for student mastering and student expectations\n Material and academic resources required to master the chosen specialty \nUniversity library and the conditions for applying its online resources\nStudent’s professional engagement: internship as a necessary term in MA studies\n Advantages and disadvantages of traditional and online teaching\nTeaching /Research internationalization and student mobility programs- efficient way of acquiring intercultural knowledge \nLingual uniformity or multilingualism?\n\nIn addition\, the conference participants can offer other colloquium topic on the university education. \nCommunication languages: Georgian\, French\, English \nArticles will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee (double anonymous evaluation). SUMMARY:"Omics Data Integration – Tbilisi 2018"
DESCRIPTION:Omics Data Integration – Tbilisi 2018 is a two-day intensive course on the analysis of multi-omics data. An international panel of instructors will provide practical examples about how to analyze\, visualize and integrate high-throughput biological data using the\nR Statistical Software. Transcriptomics (RNA-seq)\, methylation (Methy-seq) and chromatin accessibility (ATAC-seq) data will be the focus of the course. \nThe course offers several hands-on sessions\, where attendees will be guided in solving real data-analysis challenges. At the end of the program the participants will be able to perform basic analyses on single omics data\, and will know the main strategies for performing integrative analyses on the considered omics types.\nOmics technologies allow us to investigate cellular mechanisms that are at the basis of all biological processes. Omics data have profoundly changed biology and biomedicine\, fostering novel areas of research such as precision medicine. \nInstructors \n• David Gómez Cabrero\, Head of the Translation Bioinformatics Unit\, Navarrabiomed\, Pamplona\, Spain.\n• Núria Planell Picola\, Bioinformatician\, Translation Bioinformatics Unit\, Navarrabiomed\, Pamplona\, Spain.\n• Vincenzo Lagani\, Associate Professor in Bioinformatics\, Ilia State University\, Tbilisi\, Georgia. \nRequirements\nThe following prerequisites are recommended. \n• Knowledge of basic cellular processes: RNA transcription and epigenetics mechanisms. Preliminary material will be made available before the course for attendees without background in biology.\n• Basic experience in programming\, preferably in the R language. Participants without programming skills will be able to understand the concepts and ideas presented in the course. To benefit from the hands-on sessions\, participants without experience in programming should consider learning the basics of the R language: a four-hour course about R is offered for free in DataCamp.\n• Participants should bring their own laptops. \nOmics Data Integration – Tbilisi 2018 as a Mirror Event \nThe Omics Data Integration – Tbilisi 2018 course is a mirror event of the STATegra Summer School on NGS and Data Integration held in Navarrabiomed between 24 and 28 September\, 2018. \nThe idea behind Espurna2K mirror events is to replicate high-level educational initiatives in locations that are outside the circuits where such initiatives are usually held. The scope of mirror events is to maximize the dissemination of knowledge\, sparkling virtuous processes that should produce self-sustainable communities of interest on highly specialized topics. \nVenue: Ilia State University\, Room E207\, 3/5 Kakutsa Cholokashvili Ave.\, Tbilisi\, Georgia \nDates: 26 and 27 November\, 2018 \nFee: the course is free of charge. \nRegistration: candidates shall apply online through this form not later than the 18th of November\, 2018. Participants will be selected based on eligibility: priority will be given to the candidates whose profile better matches the course requirements. \nContact: contact@espurna2k.org \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Presentation "Food Safety and Essentials of Risk Assessment"
DESCRIPTION:On November 8 2018\, at 11:00\, Stylianos Koulouris\, Scientific Cooperation Officer at European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)\, will deliver a presentation on Introduction to Food Safety and Risk Assessment at ISU G 106. \nStylianos Koulouris supervises European Food Risk Assessment Fellowship Programme (EU-FORA) and is responsible for cooperation with EU neighborhood countries. \nEFSA is a European agency funded by the European Union that operates independently of the European legislative and executive institutions (Commission\, Council\, Parliament) and EU Member States. EFSA was set up in 2002 following a series of food crises in the late 1990s to be a source of scientific advice and communication on risks associated with the food chain. The agency was legally established by the EU under the General Food Law – Regulation 178/2002. \nThe General Food Law created a European food safety system where responsibilities for risk assessment (science) and for risk management (policy) are kept separate. EFSA is responsible for the former area\, and also has a duty to communicate its scientific findings to the public. Thanks to this system\, European consumers are among the best protected and best informed in the world as regards risks in the food chain. \nLanguage: English \nTime:  8 November 2018\, 11:00 \nVenue:  Room G106\, Ilia State University (1 G. SUMMARY:Public lecture by Dr. Rebekah Kim: Probing the Mysterious Relationship Between Chinese Characters and the Hebrew Bible
DESCRIPTION:On 7 November 2018\, Dr. Rebekah Kim of Harvard University will deliver a public lecture called Probing the Mysterious Relationship Between Chinese Characters and the Hebrew Bible at ISU B 201\, at 17:00. \nThe exact origin of Chinese characters has long been a mystery and subject of much academic conjecture. However\, it is commonly understood that these characters have a meaning and story which have survived the rigors of etymological developments through the ages. \nIs there a common thread that ties together the Book of Genesis from the Hebrew Bible and Chinese characters? Did the obscure religion of a seemingly insignificant nation which lay between the great Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations have any impact on the language and culture of another ancient civilization in the East\, separated by a distance of four thousand miles? \nDr. Rebekah will discuss the meaning behind different Chinese characters and explore the potential influence of the Hebraic religion and beliefs on these characters as adopted by the Chinese\, Korean\, and Japanese languages. \nLecture Purpose: \nThe purpose of this lecture is for students who are interested in linguistics and cross-cultural studies\, as well as anyone interested in East Asian cultures and languages\, to discover the potential linguistic link between the most influential literature of the Ancient Near East and the Far East Asian language with over 50\,000 characters. \nTime: 7 November 2018\, 17:00 \nVenue: B 201 Ilia State University (32 Ilia Chavchavadze Ave.) \nWorking language: English \nScope of Audience: Open to all ISU students\, as well as students from surrounding universities in Tbilisi. We will also have visitors from America and Korea. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Public Lecture by Paul Manning: "The City of Gardens: Three Garden Heterotopias of Old Tbilisi"
DESCRIPTION:On 26 October 2018\, at 18:00\, ISU (Room A101) Professor Paul Manning\, of the Trent University\, will be speaking about The City of Gardens: Three Garden Heterotopias of Old Tbilisi \nLong ago\, Tbilisi\, the old walled city that is also known as K’ala\, was ringed with suburbs\, Garetubani\, which were filled with gardens. The famed description of Tbilisi by Vakhushti in the 18th century does not describe any of these suburban gardens specifically\, only drawing attention to the extraordinary number of them. Tbilisi was in this sense a typical Persian city\, defined by a central opposition between city and suburban gardens\, contrasting models of spatial order that exist side by side. \nWhat kinds of gardens were there in and around Tbilisi? What kinds of heterotopias\, “other spaces” –spaces that announce themselves as mythic or real worlds apart from the ordinary– did they represent? What kinds of everyday practices\, of drinking and walking\, what urban genres of writing and song\, were associated with these different gardens? And how did they differ not only from the ordinary spaces – the streets and houses– of the city\, as well as from each other? Tbilisi is haunted by the after-images of these gardens. Today I want to talk about three such urban garden heterotopias: suburban walled royal gardens from the Safavid period of Sololaki\, which all were destroyed in 1795\, new Russian colonial gardens typified by Alexandrovski Garden\, and lastly\, Ortachala’s gardens\, the gardens of the poetry of Old Tbilisi. \nLanguage: English \nTime: 26 October\, 18:00 \nVenue: Room A101\, Ilia State University (32 Ilia Chavchavadze Ave.) \nAttendance is free. \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]

SUMMARY:Public Lectures Minimally Invasive Surgery
DESCRIPTION:On 23 October 2018\, at 18:00\, Dr. William V. Braun and Dr. Konrad Karcz will deliver public lectures at ISU G106. \nWilliam V. Braun\, Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons\, will speak about Complications of Bariatric Procedures. \nEach method used in bariatric surgery has pros and cons. Dr. Braun will discuss bariatric surgery procedures and postoperative complications\, as well as improvements in psychological and nutritional status following the procedures. The speaker will review the Australian healthcare system and surgical training opportunities. \nW. Konrad Karcz\, Professor\, Dr. med. PHM\, Head of Minimally Invasive Surgery at Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich will deliver a lecture on Boundaries of Laparoscopic Oncosurgery. \nThe main objective of minimally invasive surgery is to reduce surgical traumas. Performed in 1987\, the first laparoscopic cholecistechtomy was a breakthrough in abdominal surgery. Reduction of surgical traumas improves the outcomes of surgical treatment. Advancements in imaging and robotic technologies have contributed to the development of laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgery\, significantly expanding the boundaries of endoscopic and laparoscopic treatment of benevolent diseases. Moreover\, minimally invasive surgery has become crucial in diagnosing and treating malignant diseases. Nevertheless\, many questions related to the scope\, potential and limitations of laparoscopic oncosurgery still remain to be addressed.  Professor Karcz will try to answer some of such questions in connection with two vital organs\, pancreas and liver. \n\nLanguage: English \nTime: 23 October\, 18:00\, Ilia State University (1 G. Tsereteli Str.) \nAttendance is free. \n\n \n \n \n \n\n[wpai_display_imported_files_here]
